I know bones purchased from pet store specifically for eating are best,
BUT anything wrong with giving our dogs the rib bones from the standing
rib roast (prime rib of beef). If so, what? I know they'd love them.

Actually, no they are not. Those bones are cooked (oh BOY are they cooked!
<g>) and have no nutritional value at all. AND, cooked bones are more likely
to splinter than raw bones.

As long as they are RAW, there shouldn't be a problem. Go easy at first,
though. Just to get the dogs used to them! <g>

Not a thing wrong with it, as long as you haven't cooked the roast yet.
Cooked bones are dangerous (they splinter) and should never be fed to dogs.
Raw rib bones are fine; they're a great favorite at our house.

You've gotten some good responses from folks so far...
Just wanted to let you know a little something about cooked beef bones
and my experience..
Once on a trip out of town, my husband was in charge of the dogs...

He gave on of our GSD's a cooked bone..
Several weeks later 2000.00 and @ 4 feet of stitches,(the dog split from
stern to stem with stitches outside), several inside, to keep
the stomach torsional twist from happening again, we nursed our GSD
bitch back to health.
I will never again play with the odds in giving a dog cooked bones.
That's my opinion.
You may get lucky. I thought I was, til then.
I was wrong and almost lost my beloved bitch, so needless to say,
I'll never play the odds again.

this depends very much on the size of the dogs
my toy dogs greatly enjoy the rib bones from a local restaurant but we are
*very* careful to keep them away from the larger dogs who can crunch them
up!

dogs don't thoroughly chew their food, but swallow them in little pieces. If
happens the dog bites the bone and the edges are sharp, that might puncture
their intestines. **DO NOT FEED THEM CHICKEN BONES!** Chicken bones are
hollow inside so feeding them that would be a very bad idea. Bones made out of
rawhide are okay, and so are pig ears, but watch out for their teeth. DO NOT
FEED THEM PIG HOOVES. That might break their teeth!

Actually, my dogs have been eating RAW chicken bones for two years. Yes, I feed a
natural diet overall. (please read and research before trying to switch your dog's
diets).

Rawhide, hoever, is a diaster around here! They eat it so fast they choke on it! I
cannot believe rawhide digests well, worry about blockages.

Any bones, including Chicken bones MUST be RAW if fed to dogs. It is the cooking
that makes the bones brittle and dangerous. Raw bones are soft and do not
injure. Wild carvivours naturally eat raw bones without problems.
