My 15lb black and tan Dachshund Moose hates,
absolutely despises dry food of any
kind. My husband and I have tried 5 different brands.
He doesn't eat unless he's starved for 2 days.
I can't bear to see him go without food. He likes
to eat anything we eat including cantaloupe, oranges,
apples, carrots etc.

If we weren't staunch vegetarians, we would gladly
eat his food to get him to eat it too.

Any suggestions ?

P.S. I have already tried soaking his food but it doesn't work
The vet doesn't think canned wet food is good for his teeth.

Yep. Harden your heart and let him do without for a couple of days.
Put his food down twice a day, morning and evening, for 15 minutes
each time. If he doesn't eat, pick it up and let him do without
until the next feeding time.

I know it's tough to see those pitiful little hungry eyes staring
at you while you eat, but *don't* give him anything you're eating
while you're trying to get him to eat his food. As hard as it is,
in the long run he's going to be a lot healthier, and a lot less
finicky, if he has to eat the food you give him.

He'll eat - he's not going to starve himself.

Hi Usha,
It's hard to recommend a brand without knowing what brands you have
already tried. Kira gets Solid Gold Hund n Flocken which she seems to like
just fine. Before that I tried Iams, Nature's Recipe, Max and Solid Gold
Herbal, she didn't like any of those.
Though I am not a vegetarian, one of my dogs is. I make her a concoction
of brown rice, tofu, carrots or beets, safflower oil, non-irradiated spices,
and soy sauce -- all organic. I give her this for health reasons. She is a
10 1/2 year old Weimaraner which is pretty old for this breed and has been on
this type of food for about 7 years. She's doing just fine for an old lady
and has all her teeth. Hasn't had any dental problems (knock on wood).
Have you tried any of the vegetarian dog kibble that is being sold? How
about mixing some of your vegetarian food with some kibble and slowing
decreasing the amount of "people" food? Grant you, you may always have to
give him a certain amount of "people" food, but I give my youngster some of
Saavik's tofu stuff and she doesn't see to mind it, neither does the cat.
Hope this has helped you in some way.

Have you tried mixing canned food and his kibble together. If it
works, he'll get all the taste of canned food and all the crunch and
nutrition of dried food. The best of all possible dog-food worlds.

My older dog doesn't like his dry food either, and will leave it or
only eat small bites. I've tried many brands and he sometimes eats one
for a while but then quits. Since he's pretty old I don't want to take
chances with his health by letting him go hungry for long. So I mix a
heaping teaspoon of catfood into 2 cups of dry food - it's only a tiny
bit of cat food but I mix it well so it flavors all the dry food and he
just loves it. Of course it drives my cat crazy - she only gets dry
food!

My dog is a picky eater but she absolutely LOVES Waltham. As an added
bonus it does wonders for her coat and gives her nice dry compact stools.

Some friends of ours feed their dog Waltham. We were using Nutra Max.
When our dog would be over at our friends house, she would sniff out the
Waltham and start eating it. Our friend said that their dogs loved the
taste of the Waltham so much that her husband ate a piece of it to see
why it tasted so good.

Before we got the Waltham we would mix the Nutra Max with a little bit of
canned dog food and some water to make it more palatable. Now I just use
some plain beef broth and mix in a little to moisten the Waltham although
our dog will happily eat it dry or just with water.

If there is a Petco near you they've got a special on the 40 lb bags of
Waltham, a coupon for $10 off.

Well, unfortunately, I think you should just let him starve for 2 days.
I know it's tough and might even seem a little cruel, but the two
dogs I have "met" who ate people food 100% of the time were overweight,
had (literally) rotten teeth prematurely, and just didn't function well
when dog-sat or left at a kennel (no kennel is going to cook a 5 course
dinner for your dog and I'm sure my dog-sitter would charge me a
fortune (not to mention the fact that she is a serious dog person and
would castigate me severely :) if I expected her to cook for my dogs.

Your dog won't starve to death. Now, I'm not such a food fascist that I
think a dog should be forced to eat a particular brand of dog food, but
my approach would be to put a few bowls with the five foods you're now
stuck with and figure out which one your dog eventually eats when he
finally is hungry enough to eat. Then I'd stick with that one. One of
my dogs wouldn't touch Alpo with a ten foot pole (and I thought he'd eat
anything- it was an emergency and he was completely disgusted, despite the
fact that he got excited when I was filling his bowl). The other won't
touch Nature's Recipe in spite of the fact that he was fed that food as
a pup (he was ten weeks old when I got him, that's what he was fed up until
then, and he refused to eat for three days; I woke up one evening and
found him (literally :) inside my older dog's bag of Science Diet, eating
it ravenously! Fortunately, they both like that so it makes life easier
for me than my original intention to buy two different dog foods would
have.

Don't feed your dog people food and if you must, only serve a little
mixed in with the dry food. My dogs have never been fed table scraps by
me. Unfortunately, when I took my older dog with me to a visit with my
parents for a couple of weeks, he got carrot cake, sushi, pork chops, and
various other "bad" foods. He refused to eat his dog food during the
entire visit, even if it was dinner time and he hadn't gotten people
food that day. I figure he was probably holding out, hoping he'd get
some people food from my mother if he waited long enough! This is a
dog who bolts his dog food and would probably eat a twenty pound bag
of it in one sitting if he were free-fed :) The mere anticipation of
getting people food may be keeping your dog from eating his food, even
when he's hungry. Once he gets used to the idea that "it just ain't
comin'", he'll probably accept his fate and realize that he has no
choice.

Maybe your vet would not object to the canned wet food if you were able
to start Moose on a dental care program; i.e., brushing his teeth once
a day. Just get a child's size soft toothbrush and some C.E.T. canine
toothpaste from a pet store. Your vet can give you ideas on how to get
Moose used to it.

Good luck --

I have had good luck with the following...get a bottle of canola oil (or
something simialr) and fresh garlic..crush the garlic and put it in the
bottle of oil. By the next day the aroma of the garlic will have
permeated the oil; then pour a liitle of this flavored oil on the dry
food. The aroma/flavor of the garlic makes the dry food more palatable,
the oil is good for your critter's coat and the garlic helps with fleas!
Good luck, Ann Weldon p.s. i agree with your vet about the canned food,
it can cause gum problems in your dog.

Have you tried mixing the canned food with the dry food and gradually (over a
week of two) putting in less and less canned food and more and more dry food?

I have a Boston terrier and I had the same problem with dry food. I
finally tried ProPlan turkey and barley, and she does eat that, but she
does prefer wet food. My vet told me the same thing that the wet food is
not good for their teeth. I get dog biscuits for her to help clean her
teeth. Sometimes I will put a tiny bit of cheese over her dinner, and
then she eats the whole lot, both dried and wet. By the way I mix the
wet with the dry. Let me know how this works.

try making some strong chicken or beef boullion to moisten the dry food with.
I've had good results with that.

Be not so nice a few days. Your dog has now taught you to change his food
after a couple of days of non-eating. Giving in leads to a poor diet of
people food (not balanced for dogs), and canned food isn't good for dental
hygiene (can you brush his teeth?).

My 1st dog had a spell of 5 days of not eating. Didn't hurt him. Ate
heartily since then. My 2nd dog ate only half of one of her 2 meals per
day for the 1st month, and has eaten heartily since then (had some xtra fat
on her then, so no problem). Once they get the idea that what they have
is it, they'll accept this, but no giving in or you might as well give up.
