Up until september I was. Then I got my PhD, and escaped to the private
sector where I can actually survive. I looked at the sacrifices (time,
especially) that my boss had to make to make it, and realized I just
didn't have the devotion or drive to do it. I like my weekends and
evenings too much.
I now work for a small private company that is doing water analysis.
(pesticides, mercury, lead, that sort of thing). The boss shelled out
some serious $$$ for a couple of instruments, and it is up to me to get
them working again.
What are you studying?? Where??

I'm just a lowly secretary in a Chemistry dept, though I plan to use my
tuition waiver benefit to start plugging away at a Physics degree this
fall. I just have this abject fear that a PhD in Physics won't get me any
farther than a BA in Physics did. I like my weekends and evenings, but my
interests are in theoretical physics so industry doesn't appeal to me. :(
I don't think we've filled our inorganic opening (Case Western Reserve
University) if you'd like to re-think the academia thing. :)

No such thing as a lowly secretary. The secretaries in our department
were the only things keeping the place running most of the time. As for
theoretical physics, it all depends. If you get work at one of the
synchrotrons, you would need to knwo some theoretical physics. Also, IBM
is doing a lot in that area (although it tends to be on the small end of
things like that). What type of theoretical physics are you interested
in? But you are correct in that the main source for theory is in
academia.

Thanks, but nope. Getting married this summer, the fiancee has a
permanent job. Plus, I would have to do some post-docs first.

I'm actually pretty happy with my job to tell you the truth. :) Never a
dull moment. Well sometimes--the last couple of days have been slow, which
tells me they are saving up all the excitement for next week, because I
leave town on Saturday the 14th to go get married myself!! But when the
flood comes, it will be all I can do to stay afloat with a grant proposal,
three article submissions, and fulfilling one professor's duties as a
local ACS officer (??). Man will I ever be ready for my honeymoon in
Hawaii!
Ennyhoo, to keep the ol brane clicking along I'm going to start with an
advanced undergrad class in complex analysis and probability theory. If
that's successful I'll branch out into graduate-level cosmology and some
applied math. I hear that applied mathematicians can actually get nifty
industry jobs calculating stuff like how to optimally book an airplane
flight. Whereas cosmologists just get jobs in beauty salons. No, wait...

Hawaii is very nice. I want to a conference there a couple of years ago.
If yo uare in Honolulu, there is a really nice state park/beach that is
along the coast to the left (as you look at the ocean). You can rent
snorkles and masks and go swimming among the tropical fish. There is even
a giant sea turtle out there in the bay that you can swim with. Very
cool.

Heh.
Too bad, Marcel, I'm in the same area as Alison. And Alison - happy
wedding day & have a wonderful honeymoon!

Mmm, I'm looking forward to the trip and the vacation about as much as I'm
looking forward to the wedding! We're going to the Big Island, we know a
bit about it already and we're looking forward to really spending our time
on doing and seeing the stuff we want, relaxing as much as possible!

Thanks, I'm really starting to look forward to it! After the honeymoon
I'll have more time for doggy stuff, Sam and I will probably start classes
and maybe we'll figure out where there's a dog park we can visit. :)

I don't know how much experience you have with the area and weather, but I
can't emphasize the use of sunscreen enough. The sun is much hotter and
much stronger, but you don't feel it. When you get there, look for the pink
hotel. It is cool. You can also see the TSN/ESPN workout shows being taped
there. I saw a Baywatch taping once as well.

I'm Little Miss Burn 'n' Peel, so it's SPF 45 all the way! Maybe 15 near
the end of the trip, but I've ruined enough vacations by roasting and then
wandering around in pain--I really hope I've learned my lesson. I also
hope I've learned my lesson about swimming at Hapuna Beach. One of the
world's most beautiful beaches but that undertow's a killer.
(Literally--if they hadn't instituted a lifeguard on that beach just a few
years ago, I wouldn't be here typing today!)

Okay, I have to ask - (and NO ONE tell my daughter that I'm asking) but Case
Western is only half as far away as she is now.............
Is there really an opening for an inorganic prof? I *did* mention it to her
and she said there is no mention on the website.
Anything you can tell me - e-mail is fine. If it's a specific area other
than hers, there are others she could share the information with.
Thanks
