So, the instructor I'm doing my apprenticeship says, "It would be really
nice if you could get a 'Project Dog'", to work w/, teach some basic
obedience lessons to, etc. In my current situation, I couldn't have
another dog. But, I got to thinking...
At the vet clinic where I work there are occasionally dogs that people bring
in, they can no longer keep them, strays, things like that. We try to find
homes for them, and often have clients that mention they're wanting such &
such breed or mix, we call them, all good, if not rescues are called.
Well, we've had a young (probably around a year old, but I'm guessing),
intact (he's scheduled for a neuter, but it's one of those "when we get a
spare minute" type of things) male Shih-tzu/shih-tzu mix come in about a
month ago. Very sweet, very friendly. I'm hoping things will work out so
I can use him for my "Project Dog". I should know tomorrow if I can have
him for Friday nights. I have a couple of concerns, however:

One--I will probably have to keep him overnight on Fridays. Class is at
6:30, I can pick him up right before 6 p.m. (Closing time). But, after
class, there is no one at the clinic (except for emergency situations). I
work @ 8 a.m. Saturday morning, so I could take him back w/ me, no problem.
I want to introduce him to my dogs on neutral ground. Unlike them, he will
be crated at night (let out for potty breaks & play)---simply because I have
no idea how he will behave. Also, for his own safety as well. Any
suggestions, beside going slow & cautious, especially w/ Guiness. She's
not exactly what you'd call other dog friendly. She is a 90lb, 12 year
old, spayed GSD. She's tolerant, but if he were to get on her nerves, I
just don't want anything to happen. I don't want to stress her out either,
and won't do it if it seems too much for her to handle. Coda will
probably not give a darn either way, he may enjoy a new playmate. (Dog
slumber party!) They won't be unsupervised. Ever. There is a
possibility of me getting a key so I can take him back after class, but I
don't know for sure, so I want to prepare myself.
Two---Shih tzus. I know *nothing* about them! I'm starting tonight,
reading breed profiles & such. But, suggestions/tips/warnings would be
greatly appreciated! Especially concerning behavior w/ other dogs & cats
too (I have two that are pretty dog-savvy).
Three---I'm hoping that this will provide exposure for a cute little guy who
needs a home, and in the meantime, get some obedience basics down to
hopefully make him a more appealing adoptee. He's not the type of dog I
would want to have, but he is *very* sweet. So while I'm not worried about
wanting to keep him, I also don't want to cause any adverse affects either,
ie, not getting "too attached" to us. I want him to transition smoothly
to a good home. The class lasts 4 weeks, and covers the basics, like
"Sit", "Down", "Stay", "Come", "Leave it", "Enough" & walking on loose
leash.
Four---He needs a name. Badly. I call him "Big boy", as kind of a joke,
but he needs a name. I just don't feel right calling him, "Little dog" or
whatever.
There it is. Any advice?
Shelly, Coda & Guiness...

Yeah. I'd say forget about the class, read the Wits' End Dog
Training Method manual, and do the exercises with the little dog on
your breaks at work... j;~}

I don't know why, but the first thing that popped into my mind when I read this
was "Peabody." :}

Shel, sounds like you have the bases covered (you have _such good
dog-sense)
Just one suggestion, since you're looking for a good home for Peabody
(?). When you're training, look for a behavior you can turn into his
unique "signiture-trick". At a nearby private shelter, I've seen it
mean instant Lottery. (When multiple people want the same dog, they
hold a lottery.)

Wish I had thought of it for Pip. A few days ago, we passed an
18-wheeler parked tight against the curb. Very convenient for Pip –
he wet on every tire as we went by. He walked a few feet, looked over
his shoulder, then ran back.
He had overlooked the mud-flaps.

*laughing* Oh jeez, no kidding!
I saw a funny one the other day. A cat came in for a neuter.
His name?
"G.W. Bush Baby".
What the hell?

I think I want something sort of exotic-y sounding, maybe an Asian word.
Anyone know any Asian languages, and maybe the translation for "little dog"
in Chinese or Japanese? Oh jeez...where are Shih tzu's originally from?
Tibet? (No that's Lhasas...hmmm...)

Well, unless you're referring to Eric Idle, this reference has gone over my
head. It's a hard thing for me to confess, but I've never been able to sit
still long enough to get into the Monty Python stuff. :D

Shirley...now that is cute!
Being a "Transitioner" (in my early 30's), and a fan of TV of my youth, a
pair of cats named "Laverne & Shirley" would be cute!
But, really makes me think of the movie _Airplane!_

naming all kinds of things Shirley. I've had a goldfish, a dog, a old

Shirley. I like the name--makes me smile.

My twin cousin's name (yes, I did say twin cousin). We're the same age,
three months off, and we're the only blondes (and look very much alike) in a

I feel funny calling dogs by "human" names. I'm still trying to figure

I think you'll be doing a good thing. If he learns he can attach it isn't
a bad thing and maybe you can convinec a prospective family to continue
classes with them which will help with their bonding. For a while Safe
Haven in Albany was doing classes on site, with volunteers working the
shelter dogs. (they may still be for all I know, but I'm not 3 miles away
now.)
