Hello everyone,

I have a small Boston Terrier (about 12 pounds). We are moving to a new
house shortly and are planning to fence in our new yard. Up til now we have
either walked our Boston or put her on a leash in the back yard, so we don't
know what to expect when she gets the free run of a yard.

I've heard from one source that Bostons are fence jumpers, but am not sure
this is true. My question is: should we get a 6 foot privacy fence or a
picket fence (~3 ft?) with screening on the inside? What has been the
experience of other Boston owners with their dogs and their fences?

Thanks for your advice.

I don't know about Boston's as a breed, but I think a 6 ft privacy fence is the
way to go if possible. The dog won't be teased or distracted by things outside
the fence (which can be very agitating to a dog). I'd also be worried that
someone would be more likely to come over just a 3 foot fence, even if your dog
doesn't jump it (I am extremely paranoid about someone stealing my dog or him
running away).

If you have the option to choose between the two, I would choose the 6
ft fence. Better safe than sorry. For the first little while, never
leave your dog outside alone. Once you know the dog is going to stay
put, still don't leave him/her out unsupervised. I still hang out in the
doorway or window when my guys are outside. Too many kids around our
fence and Angus is a hell of a jumper. (Although he'd panic if he got
out of the fence)

6 foot definately, I am in the process of making the 4 foot fence I erected
a few months ago a 6 foot one, hindsite is a great thing.
In order to save a few bucks it has cost me more and been a lot more hassle,
especially with the dogs getting out.

I don't know where you live, but where I live the fencing comes in
either 4 foot of 6 foot lengths. I would think that a 4 foot picket
fence would be fine for a boston and the boston wouldn't be able
to jump over it. However, I would NOT put any kind of screening
on the inside. Many dogs don't jump over fences but they do climb
over fences and putting any kind of wire on the inside would allow
them to have a footing for them to climb over. As long as the pickets
are installed close enough (2 inches apart) there should be no need
for any kind of screening or wire inside of it. Keep in mind that
there are lots of other breeds of dogs that could jump a 4 foot fence,
so if you think you are ever going to get another dog you may want
to go ahead with the 6 foot privacy fence.

when you screen inside you use non climbable fence :-) works well and
considering that many breeds of dogs can walk right through pickets as they
are so widely spaced nowadays and other dogs can chew through them rapidly
the interior wire really makes the fence safer for them

Dogs can jump higher than you think so the bigger the better... I have a
regular Michael Jordan who once hopped over a 4 and half foot wall to have a
play with a golden retriever he met ) He is not a Terrier so dont panic....

I also would be more worried about other dogs (people?) coming in... so the
bigger the better...

I once heard a story about an electric fence which kept a dog in the
garden... it was nice for the owners but they forgot other dogs could get
in... they would chase after him, bark and then run away... of course he
would follow get zapped... ad infinitum...
