Hi,
I've got a 2 year old frenchie. She likes to lie on her
back...... she'll sometimes even fall asleep while lying on her back.
Is this normal? I was thinking she feels comfortable this way because
of the way she's built (large chest, short legs). Please reply via
email as well as posting to the newsgroup. Thanks!

I certainly hope it's normal! I have a standard poodle that frequently
sleeps on her back in her crate. It's a large one with a pillow across one
end and she sometimes sleeps with her head on the pillow--other times with
her hind end on it.

Frenchies delight in sleeping in positions that seem physically
impossible. The "Dead Dog Down" seems to be a fave - flat on their back
,all four legs in the air, eyes partially open. Except for the occasional
gentle snore, you really would think they were deceased.

The other fave is *my* fave - flat on their stomach, legs extended
straight out behind them. Hence the reason we call them "frogdogs".

- Carol PS - didn't see the original post, so hope this helps.

Oso almost always sleeps on his back, Tanith almost never. Oso prefers
the floor - even in winter (yes, yes I *know* he's a weird dog). Tanith
seems to have more interesting dreams. I've just been watching her. Her
lip was curling (like a dream snarl) then her forhead started wrinkling,
and her ears (big and floppy) were a twitching. Then her head started
bobbing up and down. Sometimes her feet twitch big time, and often she
wroof wroofs in her sleep. Luckily I've never had her "startle" when
touched in this state, I'm still careful though - you never know. If she
really seems to be getting into it, I just softly talk to her and she
seems to relax.

It's OK. Our beagle mix slept on her back. So does our Dobie mix and Rot

mix. Not all the time, but often enough.

I don't think anybody's dreams should be interrupted. Sensibly, it
inteferes with restful sleep (something our dogs need more of, for sure!),
and not so sensibly -- who wants dreams running around unfulfilled? They
do get loose, you know.
