Try using an empty litter box.

I need to take a urine sample from my cat- is there any easy way to do this?
I know that with dogs a metal pie plate slipped underneath usually works, I
suppose I could get a tart size plate and try that, but it seems to me my cat
may not go for that.

I do realize the vet could get a sample, but I suspect it may be
uncomfortable for the cat. I would like to cause him as little stress as
possible.

Any suggestions?

There are a number of ways you can do this.

You can take the sand out of a box and hope your cat'll go in an empty box.

Some vets have some kind of stuff that doesn't absorb liquids so the pee
stays loose in the box.

When I need a sample from Lucy, I use a 1/4 cup measuring cup (it's about
1/2 inch in height). I wait until she's starting to go and slip the cup
under her. It took a few misses to figure out where it was going to land
(she pees at an angle not straight down), but now it works fine. She is
getting sneakier about going in the box though. (She's had blood in her
urine for about six months now and I keep testing it to see if her current
treatment is working.)

Hope this helps.

getting a urine sample can be quite simple... #1 clean litterbox with
no litter in it
#2 add shredded paper
#3 Cat goes pour into cup

I had to do this last week for my cat. The vet told me to get a large
plastic garbage bag and put it over her litter, laying it flat... when
Echo went (and I didn't think she would because of the bag) the urine was
there in a small puddle and I used a spoon to put it in a jar...

Had to get a sample from Oscar once. The vet gave me a syringe
and I didn't put litter in his box. Since he had recently been diagnosed as being
diabetic, he was bound to take a pee in the near future. I just kept an eye on him,
and when he peed, I sucked it up with the syringe and cleaned and filled his box.

He has had a catheter as well and you are absolutely right, he didn't appreciate it
one bit.

Good luck.

Grant.

I simply hold the test strip in the stream as he's urinating, ensuring the
freshest possible sample. I have to do this, because Jake will not go in
anything but litter. He's nearly 14 years old, and a bit stodgy when it
comes to new things...

Clean the little box, then cover the bottom with slightly crumpled strips of
waxed paper. This will give the cat something to dig in, but it won't absorb
any but a little of the urine. You should be able to pour most of it right
out.

Priscilla (who long ago had to test the noble Sinbad's urine with litmus
paper)
