Our Purrcival is a 14-month-old neutered male DLH. I have been reading
that male cats are especially prone to having urinary tract infections
caused by the buildup of ash (?) from dry cat food. My husband insists
that we feed Purrcival dry food only (although we both sneak him table
scraps occasionally -- I know my husband does because I've caught him
doing it! ;-) ). I've tried to check his current dry food but I don't
know what to look for. We are currently feeding him regular Purina Cat
Chow. We switched him over from Purina Kitten Chow when he reached 1 year.
I have heard that there are "better" brands of cat food, but I don't know
how to decide what's best for him. Any tips?

Thanks in advance,

Brenda (Miller) Tighe

Yes, I'm always pleased to find a David Thomas post and would like to add
my thanks to him for taking the time to contribute here. I've been
following rpc for about a year and a half and I've learned a tremendous
amount about cats (and their owners) from this newsgroup.

May I add my two cents? Mr. Thomas is an invaluable contributor to
this newsgroup. I would trade any 200 of the assorted "Wicked
hellspawn who disagrees with me, I hope you die!" posts for just
one of his marvelously informative articles. And he writes like a
dream to boot.

Most dry foods are currently being reformulated to lesses FUS and UTI. As far
as I know, the best thing to lessen Urinary problems is moist foods. They have
far less of the mineral (Magnesium I think) that causes the problems.

Get back to the topic of UTI's, Wendy, a 2 year old spayed DSH, used
to have frequent infections. This was surprising to us considering
that she's female, has wet food in her diet (IAMS Natural), and what
dry food she eats is of fairly good quality (again, IAMS Nat.). Poor
Wendy had numerous infections, made many trips to the Vet, who tried
urinalysis, cultures, even an ultrasound of her little bladder trying
to figure out why she was so susceptible to these infections. We
didn't determine *why* it was happening, but her urine was
consistently alkaline. She's been having a low dose of Vit. C every
other day or so as an acidifier for several months and hasn't had any
infections. We'll probably stop the Vit. C soon, in hopes that any
crystals that were present in her bladder have since disolved.

Just wanted to mention that Vitamin C can really do the trick for some
types of UTI's. I'm not happy with giving her this supplement her body
doesn't need (bladder excepted) but I wasn't happy with the constant
antibiotic treatments either, and she was stressed and uncomfortable
when she had an infection.

Actually, I'm under the impression that cats don't need Vit. C
supplements, that they are able to manufacture what Vit. C they need
internally. Although I am using it as an acidifier for Wendy's urine,
I wouldn't give it to her just to "boost her health." As far as I
know, cats do not need Vit. C as a nutritional supplement.

I read in The Natural Cat book that cats DO need vitamin C and that it's
water soluble so any that most of what they eat gets peed out so
supplements are good. I was giving my cats vitamin C crystals before
spaying because the book said that it boosted the immune system. BUT
after that, I also read that it WASN'T good to give straight vitamin C.
Help! Does anyone know the real story???

No, I don't think any mammal can manufacture vit.C, so it's needed if
the diet is otherwise lousy, or if the urine is alcalic. It's vit.K
that gets made in at least human intestines, needed for blood
coagulation.
And as said in the original follow-up, C is water soluble, so there's
not much harm with a little ODing. But not much use, either...

Brenda -

my male cat was eating Purina when he developed urinary blockage. He
spent 3 days at the hospital, and now eats $18/10lb prescription Science
Diet. Buy premium food!

My cat loves Dad's Low Magnesium dry food. Costs less. Seems to work. When I bring something
else home he seems disappointed.

Have you actually eaten it REP? I don't like Iams cos it has chemical
preservatives. Altho I did feed it to my cats/dogs (of course the dog
food for the dogs) some years ago. Now I feed my cats APD in the
bedroom and Precise in the kitchen. (Don't ask why it's a long story.)

Well I've dried some of the dried foods too :) I understand the Lamb
and Rice doesn't have the nasty stuff in, but I was feeding Iams long
before they had this product.

In Britain they have a panel of human taste testers for pet foods :)
