I have discovered that my short-haired tabby ("Cyrano") absolutely loves
to be patted rather vigorously. He'll jump up on our coffee table and
"ask" my wife and I to pat his body (especially near the tail). It seems
the harder we do it, the louder her purrs! I'm wondering, is there anyone
else out there who has a cat(s) that loves this experience? Could it
conceivably be physically harmful?

Best regards,

Scott

My neighbor's late, great MommaCat (RIP) *loved* to be thumped on the
butt. I would be sitting on the porch and she'd come up to me, stick her
catbutt in the air, and await her thump. She's stand there for as long as
you'd do it, and purr the whole time. So, if it's any consolation, your
cat isn't the only one...

My cat Merlyn loved to be "pounded" too. I didn't realize how rough I
was with him until my neighbor's young goldern retriever yelped the one
time I started pounding on her like I pounded on him! Merlyn also liked
to have his tail tugged...drooling the whole time! Gotta love'em ;)!

Tyler loves it when I rubbed her fur wrong and kinda toss her around. I
really have to scrub her and she purrs like crazy. I have long nails and
that is a big bonus I think. Weird cat. If I am at home and working
(playing games) on the computer she will jump up and force my hand to pet
her. That's when I turned her on her back and roughed her up a bit. I
thought she would run away (like Jake would) but she wanted MORE. Oh
well....

My wife, a biology professor, was in charge of a team of assistants on a
field project; they all lived together in a big rented house, and brought
our cats up for company. One assistant would pick up Kitty, drape her over
his shoulder, and pat *hard* - like burping a baby! :-) It sounded almost
like spanking... but you could hardly hear it over the purring... she just
loved it!

Don't try that with Maxie though, or you'll go through a lot of Band-aids
and disinfectant....

Cats, gotta love 'em.

Hi Mr. Scott,

I have a two-year-old kitty, Nick, who also loves vigorous petting.
His belly is his favorite spot for lots of rough Love. He's only,
and still has a long way to go but so far, I have not broken him.

I first saw this behavior when I was a teenager (long, long ago.)
I went over to my best friend's house; they had two cats. These
were decent sized cats, btw, not skinny like Dianne Janssen's
cat. All three of them, my friend, her mom, and her sister,
used to "pound" the cats vigously with the flats of their hands.
The cats loved it. When I first saw it I was shocked.

Dave likes it okay, but purrfurrs to be scratched and stroked.
Fender-Bender only comes up to pet me once in a while and would
not put up with it for a minute. S'tinker, my SO's cat, will
only allow you to pat her head, so that' out...
Kinda miss it...
(Both of my cats are smallish, btw.
