This message concerns the last bit of a cat's nose, where the hair goes in
the opposite direction to the rest of the face, just before the hairless
triangular bit.
Most cats won't let you touch that part of their nose. I always try because
it looks so tempting but I never succeeded until the other day. I was at a
friends' house and their cat let me stroke it right there on that part of it's
nose without even twitching - even seemed to like the attention. Is there
something wrong with this cat? (It has a strange personality and always seems
to be whining about something, unlike their other cat who is very calm and
confident.) The cat in question is just an ordinary orange cat. The other one
is just an ordinary grey and white cat.

I have never had a cat that doesn't like it's nose to be touched, either
moggy or pedigree. I make a point of rubbing their noses down its length
and pressing in between their eyes and not too gently either. I'm sure
that its all down to trust, and my cats purr with enthusiasm.
I don't think you have found an unusual behaviour pattern.
Regards,
Stewart.

ORDINARY???? What is an ordinary cat? I never met one!
Roxy does not much care to have her nose touched in this particular spot.
But Dusty........She LOVES it. Her eyes close, mouth opens, PURRRRRRRRR.
She rubs her nose up and down against my finger. She gets right into it.
Then she starts to rub her teeth against my finger! She asks me to do this
at least 4 or 5 times a day :-)

My cat likes it, too, and I never though anything of it....hmmmm.

Yep. According to today's _Herald_ (Glasgow), a young man in England is
still in hospital after trying this. Saw this beautiful kitty and decided
he wanted to adopt her. Got up close and patted her right there. *MUNCH*.
He is now minus a forefinger...
The kitty in question was a tiger. I guess she wasn't *very* annoyed about
it.

Some of them do and some of them don't is my guess. Bear, who came to us
later in life, has never objected to a light stroke on the end of her
nose -- butts her head into your hand and purrs when you do. Toughie has
grown up with light strokes of the nose, which he has come to associate
with special loving. Neither cat minds having their paws stroked (so
velvety!), but tickling the pads is aggravating and tickling ribs or
poking hangy-bellies gets an outraged look :)

I think it has to with the amount of trust the cat has in you.
If the cat trusts you, he'll let you rub his head, neck, face, and nose.
Cats like having their faces rubbed. The four of our cats who trust me
enjoy it very much. They'll open their mouths slightly and perhaps rub
their gums against my hands; Dash and Willie sometimes lightly bite me.
Willie almost always will lick my hands. My husband's mother cat doesn't
much care for me. Sometimes she'll let me rub her head, face, neck and
cheeks. But, this is a vulnerable spot for any animal. The animal is
exposing its neck to you; to do this, they must trust you. Consider this
a mark of love from the cat.

Not weird at all. My large tabby loves to have his nose rubbed
as well as almost anywhere else.
My cat calico shorthair, Tina, also loves to have her nose rubbed, as well
as under her chin.
Both of my (male) kitties enjoy having the area around their nose
touched. One of them likes to be kissed there--he's always sticking his
little face into mine for just that purpose. These two cats have very
different personalities. Like most (if not all) cats, they definitely have
quirks. But I'm not sure letting themselves be touched around the nose
qualifies them as weird. Maybe the cat you mentioned is weird and also
likes his/her nose touched. ;)

my mom's cat grew up having her nose stroked. i rub my finger in circles
around her nose and she half closes her eyes, opens her mouth (still
purring mind you) and goes into a rather sonambulistic state of ecstacy! my
cat tolerates it for a moment or two and then sneezes! ;->

I think it's fun to rub a finger between the toes so they splay them
out in the "starfish" pattern. Kissycat doesn't seem to mind too much
when I do that, although I am careful not to do it too much and always
gently after some petting.
She also let me touch her nose in "that spot" today but after a couple
of pets she moved away.
It's amazing how sweet and trusting our kitties can be, even when we
rescue them as adults and they don't have the advantage of growing up
with us.
