If you're using it to keep cats away from something, I've heard that
mothballs are great for plants, etc. Mine seem to hate when I put
Eucalyptus and/or Citronella oils (mixed w/ water and sprayed on) on
them for fleas.

Mine is none too fond of limes either. Don't know about oranges & lemons.
I've heard that in general, cats do not care for citrus fruit aromas.

Good thing, too. Pine oil, a major ingredient of pine-scented cleaners, is
very toxic to cats.
I got so concerned about this that shortly before I got my cat I gave away
or threw out all pine cleaners I had. Maybe that's an overreaction, but
after all there are other cleaners (citrus-oil ones, for instance) that
don't seem to be toxic to cats.

Try Vick's Inhaler. Usually my cat just recoils from smells he hates,

Picasso, my calico, loathes the smell of cognac. She loves my lap (of
course--warmth and comfort), but late of an evening, if it's chill and
I'm enjoying a snifter, she jumps into my lap, takes about one breath and
flies from my lap back onto the floor in a state of disgust.

My mom has a cat that likes cigarettes. I was in her apartment once with
my best friend (who used to smoke) who had a bag with a pack of cigarettes
in it. The cat would not stop attacking it. I finally let him take a
little bite, and he hated it and spit it out. Cats are freaks (but that's
half the fun of them:) ). Oh, and you should put the stopped smoking in
the you know you're a cat lover thread. Judging from friends and my mom
who stopped smoking, that takes a lot, and to do it for your cat is cool (you
should thank your cat for helping you quit a bad habit).

I second that. I once used a household cleaner that was lemon scented.
Pissed the cats off royally.
I have also recently read that cats do dislike citrus smells so I guess it
stands to reason

What they both hate is: Onions. Also if it is in some delicious food - they
just won't eat it.

No, I'm serious. Ammonia is extremely volatile, and it is also a good

too volatile nor can be smelled by humans.

Depends on the cat and I bet some probably like toothpaste.
It would not be that surprising because one of my cats loves Rolaids.
Whenever she hears the tablets tumbling in their plastic container,
she rushes and beg for a tablets. She licks it, roll over it, shake
her head and continues for a few minutes and then pretends it never
existed.

They don't like WD40 either! We had trouble with a young cat that
consistently used to pee behind a sofa. None of the cat repellents
that we bought had any effect, and shooing her out whenever we saw
her sneaking behind there didn't seem to deter her either. In
desperation I sprayed the affected area lightly with WD40 and she
never did it again! (It smelled nicer than the alternative too!)

According to Desmond Morris (in "Cat Watching") it is. Perhaps that's
why Muffin, our orange & white tabby, shares our taste for peppermint
tea. We can't have a cup of peppermint tea around here without putting a
little in a saucer for him to slurp up.

I've known quite a number of cats who are extremely fond of the smell of
marijuana smoke and leaves. Not to mention a certain cat who is
pavlovianly excited at the smell of pot because he always gets catnip at

My Rusty loves the smell of bananas. One day I was eating a banana
when he jump into my lap and started sniffing the banana.
When I finished eating, I let him have a closer sniff, and
he licked the banana peel.
A veterinarian could give you the biochemical reasons why, but I believe
it causes liver damage. This is more of a problem with dogs than cats
since they are more inclined to eat to bustin' but I wouldn't take any
chances
