If you're using it to keep cats away from something, I've heard that
mothballs are great for plants, etc. Mine seem to hate when I put
Eucalyptus and/or Citronella oils (mixed w/ water and sprayed on) on
them for fleas.

Good thing, too. Pine oil, a major ingredient of pine-scented cleaners, is
very toxic to cats.

I got so concerned about this that shortly before I got my cat I gave away
or threw out all pine cleaners I had. Maybe that's an overreaction, but
after all there are other cleaners (citrus-oil ones, for instance) that
don't seem to be toxic to cats.

My cats hate the smell of Lavender (whether it's perfume, incense, oil)!
They won't come near me for hours if I burn Lavender incense near me.
They also hate Myrrh with a passion - they will turn up their noses
and walk away with an attitude when I burn that!
I noticed someone mentioned citrus scents. I don't know whay cats
dislike it, but if you get some Lemon Extract from the grocery store and put
a little on places where you don't want your cat to go - they will most
definitely leave it alone!

Due to multiple allergies, I use lavendar oils or water exclusively

My cat hates smoke. I don't know if it is the smell or what but
when I used to smoke and she was anywhere near me she would take off as
soon as I lit up a cigarette. I don't think it was the lighter because
even if she wasn't near me when I lit it and came around after I lit it
she still would book! She just hates smoke..so I quit. :)
She smelled a lit candle when she was a kitten and burned her

My mom has a cat that likes cigarettes. I was in her apartment once with
my best friend (who used to smoke) who had a bag with a pack of cigarettes
in it. The cat would not stop attacking it. I finally let him take a
little bite, and he hated it and spit it out. Cats are freaks (but that's
half the fun of them:) ). Oh, and you should put the stopped smoking in
the you know you're a cat lover thread. Judging from friends and my mom
who stopped smoking, that takes a lot, and to do it for your cat is cool (you
should thank your cat for helping you quit a bad habit).

No, I'm serious. Ammonia is extremely volatile, and it is also a good
repellent of *humans*. The said ketone, on the other hand, is neither
too volatile nor can be smelled by humans.

I'm not sure why this question was asked, but if it is to put smelly
stuff somewhere you don't want the cats to go (and not just out of
curiosity) please don't try the moth balls or amonia. Both are
dangerous to cats and even if the cat is "repelled" if he touches them
or something he will end up licking it off himself. A good rule of
thumb: if you don't want your cat to EAT it, don't have it within the
cats reach/area. Everything they step in they lick (i.e. eat) off
themselves (yuck!).

They don't like WD40 either! We had trouble with a young cat that
consistently used to pee behind a sofa. None of the cat repellents
that we bought had any effect, and shooing her out whenever we saw
her sneaking behind there didn't seem to deter her either. In
desperation I sprayed the affected area lightly with WD40 and she
never did it again! (It smelled nicer than the alternative too!)

Well, at the risk of revealing too much about our sinful home life ;-),
our cats absolutely detest the smell of pina coladas. I had just fixed
one for my fiancee when Oreo (the resident food-taster) trotted into the
kitchen to see what I had concocted. As I turned around to put the rum
back into the cabinet, Oreo jumped up onto the counter to take a whiff.
This was the ONLY time I have ever seen this little fiend run from any
type of consumable. He jumped down and fled under the bed -- presumably
to tell his brother Toejam (the independent recluse) to stay far, far

Guess we won't have to worry about them becoming alcoholics later in

According to Desmond Morris (in "Cat Watching") it is. Perhaps that's
why Muffin, our orange & white tabby, shares our taste for peppermint

Several people have reported that Jean Nate (as in the drugstore

smell, which would make sense.

My best friend discovered that her cat (who will eat *anything,

is utterly repulsed by the smell of banana. In fact, she put a
banana peel in her Christmas tree in an effort to keep the cat

We had a problem with a cute cat that came to my backyard to look at my cat
through a glass door. She put her paws on the door. Unfortunately this
made my cat excited, and he scratched my alarm tapes on the door. We put
mothballs on the steps near the door. The cat just walked right between
them and the problem continued. We had to keep spraying the visitor with
water until she stopped coming.

My Persian HATES the smell of bread. HATES fish. Likes French-Fries.
ZERO reaction to catnip(looks at me like: "uh huh, so???"

My Siamese goes nuts to get at bread. Has the same reaction to Catnip and
*all* other mint varieties. Hates french fries.

Just like people - totally unpredictable in their tastes.

Every cat I have ever had (that makes about 20 felines total) HATES the
smellof lavendar oil, which has worked wonders on stopping them from "doing
their
business" in places other than the litter box. Lemon Verbena planted outdoors
also seemed to stop the local toms from spraying the house.

My cat Bo also hates the smell of hand lotion! I've tried numerous
brands too and he hates them all. He won't have anything to do with me
for quite a while after I use any kind of lotion. He also objects to
being in the same room with me when I use any kind of a spray, whether
it be aerosol or pump!

Buttons (calico female) doesn't like the smell of Chapstick. (Don't ask
me what her nose is doing in the Chapstick - she probably thinks its
food since it is going near my daughter's mouth.) And the smell of
chlorine bleach screws her face up wonderfully (guess this means I can't
take her to a public pool - eh?). Most likely because it reminds her of
the vet's office.

I've known quite a number of cats who are extremely fond of the smell of
marijuana smoke and leaves. Not to mention a certain cat who is
pavlovianly excited at the smell of pot because he always gets catnip at
the same time.

Mikko, OTOH, loves chocolate. We give him a bit or two sometimes. Wow,
he purrs...But then, he loves about anything brought for him. And
absolutely no harm yet with the chocolate. Why is it supposed to be so
harmful? Never even heard of such until this group.

A veterinarian could give you the biochemical reasons why, but I believe
it causes liver damage. This is more of a problem with dogs than cats
since they are more inclined to eat to bustin' but I wouldn't take any
