I accidentally left the toilet seat up one time. The next sound I heard was
"splash", when I turned around, my cats rear end was sticking out of the
toilet. I quickly washed his head and front paws off (that is all that
got wet) and called the vet. The nurse laughed when I told her my cat
fell in the toilet and said it happens all the time. I started laughing
also even thought I was still upset. Needlees to say, I make sure
the lid is down now. Anybody else have a cat that fell in the toilet.

My cat Tabitha has fallen in the toilet a few times also. I would hear
"splash" and look around and see her jumping out of it. She has also jumped
into the bathtub after I have filled it for a bath. Boy she jumped out of it
as fast as she jumped into it.

When we got our cat Shamrock, the toilet seat was usually down, and
so was the lid. Our kitten at the time would jump up to perch on the
lid. In about a month, my brother and me and Shamrock are in the
bathroom, my brother peeing in the toilet. The kitten gets curious
as to what my brother is doing, decides to jump up onto the lid
which isn't there now. Splash and being peed on. I grab the cat
and wash her off in the sink to get the pee off.

Right after moving into my current house, I started turning the AC off after dark and
opening the windows when it started getting somewhat cooler.. Well.. My cats,
one day, realized that the screens would pop out if they'd push hard enough..
Finding no flashlight, and knowing that they weren't about to turn themselves in anytime
soon, I was about to give up and go back in when I saw 4 little eyes glowing in the dark
(reflections from a porch-light accross the street) under a bush at the rear of my
backyard.

I have to keep the lids down on my toilets because my water-loving
cat Dora will play in the water! She splashes it around and gets herself
and the floor all wet. I don't think she's ever fallen in (implying her
immersion was uncontrolled), but I do worry about her falling and not
being able to get out (she's tiny).

This is a true story, and I do not recommend anybody to follow the below
mentioned procedure for:

Cat Washing

My brother has 3 cats and 2 children. Fie, girl 3 years, is
very keen, that everything should be clean and neat.

One day when she was in the bathroom by herself, the youngest cat, 1 1/2
years, came into the bathroom and jumped to the seat. Fie then pushed it
into the water, put down the lid and flushed the toilet - all in a split
second.

When her mother heard this, she immediately ran to the bathroom and
liberated the cat - very wet, very fast to get out - and the cat has not
come near the bathroom since then.

So - take care to teach the children not to wash cats! Especially not
kittens which might drown or get flushed into the pipes!

A guy friend of mine picked me up one day and used my bathroom before we left.
When I got home, I discovered he had left the seat up. I just followed the
blue catprints to the bathroom to the big blue splash on the tile. :(

I was sitting in the living room when I heard "splash" and saw a blur
zing across the room. Kitty Face had a look on his face like, "Mom, I
was just attacked by the toilet!! Why aren't you doing anything about
it?!?!?" He always gives the toilet dirty looks. He's never forgiven it.

I have a funny story that goes to this catagory:

When Mimi came to my home, she was a 4 mo. old curious kitten. Well, she
was always facinated by the swirling water whenever I flush the toilet.
One day, I left the bathroom after I had just flushed. I left the cover
open for her to watch, just for fun. All of sudden, I heard a loud
splash, followed by a very wet cat dashing out. Mimi had been
attracted to the water so much, that she fell right into the toilet! She
had learnt to be cautious after that incident. I didn't think that quick
volunteered bath would help, so I had to give her a real bath that day in a
tub.

Here's a bizarre addition to your toilet story.

I know of a kitten that flushed itself down a toilet with she fell in.
She was just large enough to displace enough water to generate a flush.

The story has a happy ending -- the City came and removed manhole covers
and the kitten found her way out out of a storm drain and then found her
way home. She lived to be a very old cat.

When my wife and I read this story about your cat falling into the
toliet, it brought to mind something that happened to me shortly after
we had gotten married. My cat Taffy (a very large Persian who has since
passed away) loved getting on the edge of the tub and watching me take a
bath. After Michelle and I married, she and I rented a house and it's
tubs edge was much narrower than my old tubs had been. So... the next
time I went to take a bath and Taffy jumped on the tub to watch I ended
up with a cat in the tub with me. Both Michelle and I though it was
verry funny - Taffy was not at all amused.

BTW - She didn't stop observing baths, she just moved to the toliet top
for her ring side seat.

Another funny story: My cat "Phisto"(surprise), loves to jump on the bookshelves. Our 20 gallon fish tank is
located right next to the bookshelf where he likes to spend the most time. He also uses the filtered water as a
drinking fountain every now and then. One day while watching television, I heard a peculiar noise behind me. I
am used to hearing him on the bookshelf, but this was a different sort of noise. He was attempting a world kitty
record for the highest shelf in a single leap (from the fish tank), (which is a separate catgory). He made the
shelf!! However in doing so, he also knocked a very large stereo speaker to one side. It rocked on the shelf, the
shelf rocked, and so did Phisto. At this point, he decided that staying where he was was not an option. He
therefore leapt the 4and1/2 feet back down to the top of the fishtank, and was very surprised when the plastic
cover, which had always held his weight before, decided that today was the day it taught him a lesson. He
wound up swimming with some equally surprised little fishies. He exploded out of the fish tank taking several
gallons of water with him (no fish thank heaven), and is still a little wary of the tank. "And there's nothing at all to
be done about that!"

When you say blue catprints does that mean you use a flushing toilet bowl
cleaner? Are they safe for cats who drink out of the toilet? I personally
don't use them, but have often wondered.

I have a black and white tom named Romper. Romper was one of four feral
kittens that we rescued from a storm drain at work. Romper seems to have
a fasination with water, in fact he even jumps into the shower with me.
I have been host to a number of cats over the years and I have never seen
one that likes to play in the water as much as he does. He also has a
thing about playing in the toilet, the sink, and mud puddles when he is
outside.

I would imagine that ANY chemical cleaner placed in a toilet bowl is not safe
for a cat to drink. I don't use them either for exactly that reason. My cats
prefer the toilet over the water dish so I make sure the toilet water is as
clean as it can be if they're going anywhere near it. Actually, I never used to
let them drink out of the toilet (fear of drowning) until one day I watched how
they did it (leaning over the edge, not standing on the seat leaning in) and
realized that they are pretty careful and are smart enough not to fall in, so
now it's okay. I would still keep a kitten away though, because they are too
small to lean over the side and could very well drown if they fell in.

Isaac (rip - also black and white) jumped in the toilet one night. He was
racing around the apartment and to a fluing leap onto the toilet.
Unfortunately the top was up and "splash". We have always kept the lid
down ever since. Isaac also took a bath with me once.....he was sitting
on the edge of the tub popping my bubbles and having a "marvelous" time.
When he ran out of bubbles close to him he decided to walk across the water
to the rest. I still can see the disgruntled look on his face. And of course
he blamed me....

When my SO and I lived in an apartment, Truffle had the habit
of coming to visit us in the morning when either of us were
in the bathroom. Her routine included jumping onto the toilet
seat (lid down) and then onto the counter to check out things.
One morning, the toilet seat did not get put down, and Truffle
didn't notice and *splash* in she went! We humans laughed and
poor Truffle got embarassed. I had to chase her down to dry
her. Now she checks first before jumping on the toilet.

It's an embarassing but harmless accident for cats.

My two cats *used* to sleep in the light fixture of "their" bathroom.
One day my husband hears a horrible CRASH, BANG, and then SPLOOSH. As
he is leaving his office to check things out, they came careening down
the hallway as fast as their puffed out tails will let them!

Needless to say, the light cover had cracked and dumped them out to
land in the toilet on the way down. Ewoyn was so scared she ran down
the hall and into the floor-length mirror at the end of it! This is
only funny because they were NOT hurt and once determining that, We
laughed out guts out!

When we got our cat Goliath (known in the vets office computer as Big Butch
Bam Bam Goliath Kitty) we were told by the animal shelter that he was about 2
years old and had been owned by a little old lady who had moved to housing
where she could not have the cat.

When we brought him home he followed me everywhere, and was curioius about
every thing.

This led him to a discovery about differences between the male human and the
female human. He had followed me into the bathroom and I was standing doing
my business when he put his paw up on the rim of the toilet and stuck his head
between my legs. Needless to say he got a very rude suprise.

After that when he felt a need to check out what I was doing he got up on the
sink to inspect the situation from above....

I do (since I hate cleaning toilets), but I buy brands which are advertized
as `safe for children or pets'. Of course, my cats always have the
alternative of that nice clean water in the bowl in the kitchen. Which they
rarely drink.

Our kitten, Solie, followed my husband around when we first got her.
She would follow him into the bathroom. Once when he was releaving

All my cats drink from the toilet which I find weird and disgusting but
the vet said it's ok to let 'em. I think they like it because it's cold.
One of my cats especially enjoys watching the water swirl around during a
flush. I'll sometimes do a clean flush just for his amusement. He pokes at
it.

If you find it disgusting as I do, why don't you close the LID?
Don't you use chemical or javex or powder to clean your toilet?
I am sure that is bad for the cat! If the lid was closed the cat would never
know about this, I had many cats in my life and not one ever done this.
In the past toilets did not have lids, why did they build them if not to
use them?
When we have visitors on can tell right away who closes the lid and who
don't!

My cats loved watching the toilet flush when they were small, but
they're not interested now. I don't really think its worth getting
worked up about them drinking out of the toilet, after all its only
water once you've flushed. Similarly I can't get worked up about putting
the lid down, what purpose does it serve? It has been shown (consumer
mag.) that using chemicals to clean your toilet gives no better a
cleaning effect than just using a toilet brush regularly, and the
chemicals are not very good for the function of the bugs in the sewerage
treatment plant. I say let the cats drink from the toilet if they want,
better they drink there than not drinking at all, but if they do drink
there limit the use of strong chemicals. (vinegar will remove those
stuborn stains pretty well if you can't just scrubb them off)

This saved our marriage. (Well, okay, but it helped us past our early
years. :-) We managed to avoid all the arguments about leaving the
seat up/down because neither of us could stand the idea of the cats
helping themselves from the bowl; it became a rule early on that the
seat was closed after use.

Well my cat never fell in the toilet, but he loves to hang out in the
bathroom...

Usually before I leave the house I give Elijah (my wonderful black and white
kitten) a kiss on the head. For several days I noticed his black head smelled
oddly fresh. Searched the house to figure out what he'd gotten into --
couldn't locate it for days and this fresh smell was getting stronger all the
time.

Finally I came home one day and his little white paws where blue. Turns out
the kitty's been dipping in the tiddy bowl.

Being a single male with an aversion to lowering the lid, my cats have had
several commodal mishaps, usually just the basic fall in and splash
everything. However, I have 0ne cat that is mechanically inclined and he
has learned to flush the toilet, among several other things. Now, when I have
kittens I am very consious of the toilet and protect them from tragedy by
closing the lid, but when they get large enough to fend for themselve and
survive a flush I tend to get lapse again. The reason for that happeded around
cat #6. He was a large male and very curious, fascinated by the toilet. I'm
sure my toilet flushing cat capitalised on this, this is his pride. On evening
when I was home I heard a flush and a blood curdling "MEOW" and you can guess
what happened. I wnet into the john sure enough, Cat#6 was soaking wet,
grsasping onto the edge of the toilet. The flushing Cat was looking at him as
if to say
"Hey, it wasn't me". I picked up the victim and dried him, but, that event
hasn't happened again. I thought it was funny. You should be here with people
visiting and the toiolet mysteriously flushes.

speaking of cats and toilets.....boots pulled a good one on me last
night. we went out to dinner for my birthday and i had a couple of
drinks...well, when i got home, i REALLY had to pee. i dashed back to
the bathroom and had just reached for the lightswitch when i heard this
THUMP and felt something run past me. needless to say, i didn't need to
go to the bathroom anymore. bootsy apparently had been drinking out of
the toilet again, and >>I<< scared HIM when i ran back there.

Sonora goes in there on purpose, to play "fishing" and to swim. He has
an odd fascination with water--used to get in the bathtub with me! I am
not too keen on the idea of his being in the toilet if I'm away. He
could, I worry, hurt himself, get stuck if another cat pushes the lid
down (yes, mine ARE capable of such subterfuge), or drown. So I always
try to leave with the top securely down. I just forgot the last time I
went out. When I came back Sonora had clearly been practicing for the
Olympics! Water was splashed all over the area and little muddy (cat-
litter, I think) pawprints all around the seat and back. What do you
think it would take to put little sponges on his feet and train him to
clean it? 8-) Meredith, Evil Mom!
