I feed my cats Maxximum Nutrition dry cat food. They also like a can of
Friskies everyday. But alot of times they only eat part and the rest is thrown
away. Do cats really have to have canned food? Isn't dry food enough. It is
an expense too.

No, dry food is NOT enough. However, here's a bit of advice;- feed a little bit
of canned food at a time; when the dish is empty, put another spoon or two in
it. Less waste!

You opened a can of worms here. Big time. I would talk to your vat about it.
Most vets taht I have talked to say not to give wet food at all. It leads to
bad tooth problems. How ever my vet said one 3 oz can twice a week is what I
sould feed my cat. So I do.
Off topic a little- Friskies is about the crapiest food you can feed your cat.

As I have posted in another thread, I am in the process of adopting a
Russian Blue/mix kitten and I have been given several coupons for free
kitten food. Each coupon is for a free 4-pound bag of Hills Science
Diet Feline Growth or cans (6-large or 12-small).

It has been a LONG time since I have had a kitten, well over a decade.
I know that this brand of cat/kitten food has been around for a very
long time. I guess what I am asking is, is it as good as I seem to
remember it is? I fed my last two cats different brands and do not
think that I have ever used this brand. Free food is great to start
out with, but I want to make certain that it is good food. This
formular is supposed to be formulated for kittens...

My vet feeds his cats (and recommends I feed mine) Hill's T/D (tartar
control) dry. She really likes it. However, once a week I give Persia a
can of Fancy Feast as a treat. She loves it in any flavor. I actually
stood in the aisle at the store comparing ingredients on the cat food cans
just as I would with my own food; the ingredients really *are* better. As I
said, I only feed this to her once a week, but she sure knows what day
Saturday is! (One day she tried to fool me and got into the pantry and
scooted down a can of Fancy Feast on *Sunday*.)

I only feed my cats dry food. They are healthy and happy. My last cat lived
to be 20.

well I have just determined that it won't work for me. :0(

Maybe this link will work better. It goes right to the Hill's section:

Failing that this one goes the main cat food section:

Phew. I hope one of these links works right.

Dear Catherine:

Most _all_ pet foods contain ethoxyquin... which is a poison... read
link below.

<a href="http://www.noahsark2by2.org/ethoxyquin.htm">Ethoxyquin (EQ)
-Noah's Ark</a>

As a petsitter and cat lover-owner-slave, I only use Nature's Recipe...
kitten dry food link below. It has absolutely NO preservatives, poisons,
etc... and they love it!

<a
href="http://www.naturesrecipe.heinzpetproducts.com/catproducts/lifestages_kitten.asp">Kitten
food -Nature's Recipe</a>

If you go to the Nature's Recipe website,

<a href="http://www.naturesrecipe.heinzpetproducts.com/">Nature's
Recipe</a>

you will find you can get free coupons and stuff to try out their
products.

I personally have 3 cats and one 120# black lab... and each one has been
able to test each and every pet food on the market... all of them... and
they _all_ prefer the Nature's Recipe to any other... except the cats
really like their tuna (dolphin-free, fresh then cooked) occasionally...

Good luck with your new baby!

Hello,

I have raised three kittens on it and as adults all five of mine go on food
strike if I try to change. And they rarely are interested in people or
canned food.

During the summers here (HOT!) I put the cans of catfood in the
refrigerator to make them last longer. Lately it's cool and the cats
are wasting no time in devouring everything in sight!

mmm...my 4yr old really likes the can food...my 6yr old seems to prefer the dry
food...when it comes to Friskies, i only feed them half a can a day...unless
it's Friskies Fancy Feast, and i will give them the whole can because it is
small...you might try only giving them half a can, and refrigerating the
remainder of the can for the next day...works like a charm for me....

dunno...my one vet sold Science Diet in his office...including moist Science
Diet...
my 4yr old would revolt if i didn't feed her the moist food...<g> cats can get
their teeth cleaned, and quite frankly, i would be way bored with eating the
same thing 24/7 ad infinitum...wouldn't u??

Who said my cat eats the same thing 24/7. She gets one small can of IAMS kitten
on Mon. and Fri. and she eats a mix of Nutro Max, Nutro Natural and Natural
Recipe. And she gets tuna and other people food alot. Just because you feed
your cat just dry food doesn't mean it has to be borning. Megan

i meant canned food...
and the vet sold canned Science Diet...

i have heard this before...and perhaps it is true for my David...but my
Bathsheba likes to eat a variety, there is no doubt...and when i eat anything
(but especially meat and shellfish), she is in my plate until i give her
some...

With my 2 monsters a can of Friskeys lasts 3 days. If I give it to them all on
one day they gobble it down and spend the next hour vomitting!

Canned food is often 80% water and is definitely not a must in any
cat's diet. A good quality dry food and plenty of fresh water is all
your cat needs.

Canned food is often 70% water, much like a cat's wild prey
would be, and this helps keep the cat in proper water balance.
Because cats are desert animals, they evolved to get their water from
the prey they eat, and thus do not have a thirst reflex like humans or
dogs. Cats very often do not drink enough free-flowing water (water
dish, etc) to stay properly hydrated, and that is a major cause of
uninary tract problems like infections and blockages.
While one does not have to feed their cat solely on canned
food, it is significantly better for them than a diet of solely dry,
and one would think that a responsible breeder would have done the
research necessary to keep their cats in the best possible health.

A cat's natural diet (rodents, small birds) is mainly water as well. Cats have
evolved to get most of their water requirement from prey.
