My four year old cat has begun hissing at me. I've never hit hurt or abused her
in any way, but always lavished affection on her. Just out of nowhere she will
hiss at me and run away, then (sometimes) come back a couple minutes later and
run against my leg. The hissing is so sudden and seems not to be caused by
anything I do. Other times, usually while I'm petting her,and she seems to be
loving it, she'll turn on me and bite and/or scratch me, then run a few feet
away. Sometimes the attack will be preceded by a quick glare. I see no health
problem--certainly nothing obvious. She's an indoor cat (spayed when she was a
kitten.) Maybe she's bored? She hasn't been out of the apartment in years,
butshows no desire to leave the apartment.
Any answers or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My oldest cat does this when she's had enough or too much attention. She'll be all
into the petting then suddenly WHAM! you're bitten :) Casey (this cat) is 9 years
old.

My baby cat doesn't do this. He's very much a "ooooh love me LOVE ME " cat. He
can be aggrivating but at other times he's greatly appreciated cuz he knows when
you need him. Zephyr is 1.5 years old.

As for your cat, don't worry about her. She is probably just letting you know her
boundries.

Well . . . cats are weird like that, that's for sure. No two are exactly
alike.

Are there any things (now THINK) going on that are new . . . do you have an
apartment cleaner/maid or a new friend or girlfriend that is alone w/the cat
and maybe is mean to it while you're not there? Has anything changed in you
life w/in the past few months? Have you moved, or had another pet pass
away, or anything at all that may be ticking your cat off? Did you go on a
long trip and leave her w/cat sitters or in a kennel.

Does she scratch or hiss at you when you pet her in a certain spot? A
friend of mine's cat will shred your arm/fingers to bits if you pet behind a
certain point on his back, scratch his head and that's fine.

Also, you may just want to bring her to the vet and get her a checkup if
it's been a little while since the last one, she could be trying to tell you
something.

And finally, you may just have one of those psycho cats.

My little (2 1/2 year old) feral kitten (will always be a kitten) does this
(hiss) when my son just looks at her - she doesn't trust him - I think it's
probably because he grabbed her when she was about 6 weeks old - she also does
it to me once in a while - but after 2 years she finally comes by me and rubs
on my legs and purrs! And she finally allows me to sit her on my lap and stroke
her - but if anything comes near (like one of my other 3 cats) she'll jump off
and give me that 'spit' sound - I still love her to death .....cg mom to

One of my cats did this some years ago. It was so completely abnormal of him
to do it that I took him to the vet, who promptly discovered a urinary tract
infection. After a course of antibiotics, my cat was back to normal. The vet
said the hissing was probably the way my cat was trying to tell me that
something was wrong. Might be a good idea to take your fur baby to the vet,
just in case... -- Beckie

enough to write:

You probably smell different or look funny.

I have two cats who usually get along fine. One of them was sick
recently. Had some fur shaved off of one cheek because of an abcess.
The other cat started shunning him and hissing.

Have you changed your bath soap or hair products or deodorant
recently? Or gotten new clothing or had your hair styled?

Cats sometimes do things like that for no apparent reason.

take her to a vet, there may be a health issue responsible for the change in
behavior. Also, since you said "she hasn't been out of the apartment in years", it
is time to get her a check up even if there was no behavior change.

YMMV,
Joshua
