I just got a Maine Coon kitten for Christmas and our family has a 5 year old
Bengal that is not the most social cat. I have read a few things about how
to introduce them but I am looking for more suggestions.

I have kept the two separated and I allow the kitten to occupy different
rooms so that the Bengal can get used to the scent. I tried what one site
suggested and put the kitten in his crate and put in a room where the cat
could look at him. The Bengal just acts scared and doesn't even move. We
have also let the Bengal look at him through a crack in the door and all he
does is hiss. From what I have read this is acceptable; and it said
growling is a bad sign and that has not happened.

The Bengal has also isolated himself from his favorite rooms in the house
and just secludes himself downstairs, but he is becoming more adventurous.

Any help on this matter would be much appreciated.

Well Ron
The Bengal is well established in his own home with all his own territory -
all his own smells and his own area's which he has well scented. He get's
all your attention - all the love he need's - and even his own feeding area.
Now you have bought in a newcomer. You put your Bengal in a CRATE !!!!
well - I'm sure that wasnt a wise move - no wonder he was scared. I could
add the words Humilliated to that- as well as extremely annoyed and
frustrated...... !!!
What can you do ?
Well - firt off I would ditch the cage. Then - give you Bengal some prime
time alone with you. Try to re-assure him - You may then want to get your
Wife or partner to wear some strong Gloves and introduce the two to each
other for a "Half Hour period" -If any aggression starts - then seperate
the two and repeat the process in a few days time. Aggression again ?
Seperate the two and repeat the process again. This may go on for a long
time. I have tried this method over a three month period and some time it
works and sometimes I have had to accept that it will not work. I have a
four year old Bengal that eventually refused all food and water until he was
very ill - all because he would not accept another Bengal.
I wish you well and hope you keep me informed .

You've done what's necessary. You've done your part, now it's up to
them. Just open the doors and let the chips fall where they
may. They'll eventually introduce themselves and sort out the kitty
social heirarchy (and re-sort it later, as the Maine Coon grows to be
a HUGE cat, while Bengals are rather puny cats). Just make sure to get
the Maine Coon fixed at an early age, so that sexual politics never
enters the equation. (Once upon a time it was recommended to wait
until 6 months or later, now veterinarians can do the procedure upon
kittens as young as 3 months with no problem, contact your
veterinarian to see what he/she recommends).

*boggle* Puny? Have you ever met a male Bengal? You're
talking an average of 18-20 lbs of solid muscle. If that's puny, I'd
*hate* to see what you consider large.
