I noticed in another post on here that someone mentioned that their Maine
Coon drinks lots of water. So does mine; she will just sit down in front
of her water bowl and drink for ages. I was curious about other people's
Maine Coons. Are they copious drinkers too?

From article <33a1sh$8...@search01.news.aol.com>, by nois...@aol.com (Noisette):

We have two one year old Main Coon cats...one of each....
and yes they do drink a lot...perhaps this is due to the dry food they eat
almost exclusively...they do have a particularly cute habit of drinking from
their paws....they will scoop up the water and drink from their paw....most
of the time, however, they use the conventional method.....I am also
impressed at the amount of urine he produces as judged by the size of the
clumps in the litter box......

We did have these cats declawed at 12 weeks and even though they didn't
scratch at that time, as they matured they began to "scatch" at every
opportunity which makes me think that there is more to scratching than
just to remove the scale from their nails...I believe it is part of their
instinctive behavior and marking of territory....

My Coon Cat, Puck, loves water. She likes to sit in the sink and get
SOAKED! She will try and drink right out of the faucet, managing to get
her tail in a pot of water, and then plop down in the wet sink and further
soak herself. Its really funny... She also waits at the bathroom door til
someone is done with their shower, and as soon as that person opens the
door, she *zooms* in to play in the wet shower stall. One time, her tail
was sooo wet from playing in the sink, when she hopped down and onto the
floor, her tail dragged behind her. She kept looking behind her to see
what was 'pulling' at her tail! She is hysterical, and one _very_ cool
cat...

After I feed my cats in the morning I head upstairs to take a
shower.....before I get there, Ollie, the Maine Coon, has raced up the
stairs and is sitting on the sink meowing for me to turn the faucet on --
he will sit there for 10-15 minutes drinking water from the faucet!!

Bernie, who I suspect has at least SOME Maine Coon blood, considers getting
water part of his daily routine. When I come out of the bedroom, he runs
into the bathroom nearby and jumps into the bathtub. He just won't be
satisfied until I turn the water on a little, and he'll drink for ages.
The bottom of the faucet sits about at his mouth level (he's a BIG cat)
and he will sit there drinking. It sounds weird from the other side of
the wall, because sometimes he licks the faucet itself and all I can hear
is this rasping noise.

Our cats also like to drink flowing water, but often that is
not available, and we provide them with good, fresh water every
day in nice clean bowls. Do they want that? No. They go outside
and find slimy flower pots, and any other container that has a
nice green slime of algae on the surface. That's what they
really seem to like. Last year we had a clogged drain gutter
that got so obnoxious that we only found out about it after we
smelled it. Then, when it was cleaned, we found that the cats
were very unhappy, visiting the place every day to find out if
it was smelly again.

Anyone else had experience with cats that like messy water?

Does the Big Ceramic Water Dish (freshly-drained, I might [better!] add) count?

Bozo's favorite flavor of water is blue, though green will do in a pinch.

Oh yes, the big ceramic water dish also counts, but only in a
pinch, and only (thank heavens) with clean water. Much
preferred is either flowing stuff or green stinky stuff. Maybe
they get proteins from the green algae? ;)

Yes but in my case it's Turkish Vans. Despite fresh water inside (which
some do drink) most prefer to go outside and drink the rainwater (perhaps
it tastes better??). As mentioned they don't object to a good growth of
algae. Some will also drink from a stream just outside the house. In
fact my water is spring water anyway so it can't be that different from
the stream - but that's cats for you.
