>Just how much better is Hill's Science Diet for my kitty (6 mos old) over
something like Friskies?
Science Diet and Friskies (or other name-brand commercial foods) are both
well-researched and tested foods that are properly nutritionally balanced
for your kitten. The kiity will probably have smaller stool volume (food
is more completely digested) and a little glossier coat on Science Diet.
However, if she loves Friskies, make her happy and keep feesing it.
She'll do just fine.

You say HE...and thus you have to check the ash content on the food and
ALWAYS feed him that with the lowest %.....I have an almost 6mo male kitten
and he too dislikes Sci. Diet. But, there are other brands....Triumph, is one,
there are a number of so called "premium" foods that taste better and are good
for the cat...Even with Triump, I find tht the varieties differ on ash content.
Have to always check.

(Does it make a difference if it's male or female about the ash content?)
I checked SD, and it has 6.5%, and I recently bought IAMS (PHEW TALK ABOUT
EXPENSIVE!!!) and it has 7.0%. Ripples really likes the Iams kitten food,
and still loves that kitten friskies, so I mix all three up in his bowl,
and that seems dealable to him. (A compromise!) :)

I believe one should worry about the magnesium content rather than the
total amount of ash in the food. Of the major premium brands (Hill's
SD, Iams, NutroMax), I notice that SD lists the lowest Mg content (max
Mg 0.08%). This is why I use it--I like the ingrediants listed for the
natural (ethoxyquin-free) versions of Iams and NutroMax better. People
owned by cats with problem-free urinary tracts probably have different
priorities.

That's right... my family and I have 6 cats and they all eat Science Diet
light...(unfortunately Strawberry ..the mother of 4 of the other 5, likes
to munch in between meals and she munches lots....)
We HAD tried Friskies and MeowMix, and other commercial brands, and even
tho they liked them, all of the cats kept having diahrrea...and the vet
told us that Science Diet had the proper amount of ash for their diet...
I dunno if that is BS, but they stopped having their little problem once
they started eating the stuff....
It may be because my cats are special... not all cats have that
problem...or else noone would buy friskies...
Another thing is choosing between cans and dry foods...
We aways give them dry.. I forget why... but it's nicer to leave out
during the day for them....it doesnt spoil as easily as canned stuff...
Oh...and on their birthday(s), we give them Round steak that is broiled
in the oven with a pinch of pepper..as a seasoning... They love it...
someteims I want it too..:)
Or on other occasions, they get boiled chicken or canned tuna(in spring
water).
Well...I hope this wasnt boring....

Same with my Devon. He has greenish gooey diahrrea when he eats Deli
Cat or other stuff. I read it was the soybean, not the ash, that gave
him the problem.
Regardless, he now eats Nutro or Iams and is doing much better...and neither
has soybean listed in the ingredients.
