There have been several threads regarding Pet Insurance and whether it
is worth it to purchase or not. I have recently had a very negative
experience with PetCare Pet Insurance (petcareinsurace.com). I
purchased the senior plan for my Pomeranian and paid the monthly
premiums. When my dog became ill with cancer and I submitted my
claims for nearly $1,000, the insurance company refused to honor the
covered peril. They changed their reasons several times for refusing
to honor my policy. Initially they stated that it was a pre-existing
condition. When my veterinarian sent all records stating otherwise,
they said if he was definately diagnosed, they would pay. Well guess
what, they never paid, the only check I received was for the
euthanasia that was eventually necessary ($30). I submitted several
letters and they were very rude in return. I do not recommend this
company to anybody that is considering Pet Insurance. I do not feel
that they are a legitimate company. I submitted compliants to the
Better Business Bureau, the Insurance Commision, the Attorney
General's office and I also consulted with my legal plan. All felt I
had a good case but I eventually did not pursue legal action because
of the costs involved. It was a learning lesson and a waste of money
to pay the premiums. I would have paid less without the insurance.
Thank you for listening to my frustration, I feel better after venting
and if I can help others from experiencing what I went through, great!

Thanks for this post. The saying goes, "a satisfied customer will tell 10
people, but a dissatisfied customer will tell 30". You should spread the
word to as many people, in as many ways as possible.

In all 50 states, the amount they refused to pay you falls well within
the limit of Small Claims court. For a small filing fee (usually less
than ten bucks) you could have sued them (still CAN sue them, in fact)
and then they have a choice.

Pay a lawyer to travel to YOUR jurisdiction and answer the suit in YOUR
local county court, or send you a check and settle the case.

Care to guess which they'll choose? <big grin!>

Why did you pay monthly? Was it that expensive?
How long were you paying premiums then? Did you pay for months or
were you paying for years? My guess is that most insurance companies
will
not pay unless there is a long payment history beforehand. This is not
stated, for obvious reasons, but your post confirms what I have
suspected.

There are mainly really 2 pet care insurers in the USA. Both of them
are really reluctant to pay out, apparently,

where there is not enough of an established history. I have seen cases
from both similar to yours. Your vet was able to establish a long
history
before the insurance took effect, that is, several years at least?

Your pet insurer is mainly from Canada and is relatively new in the
USA.
Apparently different states have different providers assuming the role
of the insurer, unlike its competitor, VPI, which is national. I am
concerned
about your former insurer because of the possibility of tremendous
variability on who really assumes the cost of the insurance for that
particular state. I am a bit surprised since your insurer is
supposedly
not as rough for pre-existing conditions as VPI (Vet Protection
Insurance?)
and will take on congenital conditions.

Since I am looking for insurance also, I guess I will now have to
check
with my state and see what the claims and complaints look like now.

What costs? What state are you in that you would have costs for the
BBB, the Insurance Commission, and the Attorney General? I could see
some
costs for a tort case, but that seems minor, even trivial if you
go to Small Claims' Court, which is the case for $1000 in most places.
The fee is sometimes as low as $10, I have heard. Do you know have
the equivalent of Small Claims? I thought a legal plan would
definitely
help you out, at least point you in the right direction.

Your case seems simple, no expert testimony, so you could possibly
do it pro se if there is not any small claims' courts in your area.

You are in New Mexico then? Yes? Hmmm. I noticed that this particular
pet insurer varies from state to state. I forget how I found this out.
But it caught my attention. Really, this company is in Canada and is
sort of what,
subletting kind of to various sub-insurers in the USA. This could lead
to your experience. I am trying to avoid exactly what happened to you.
