Hi all,
I got my cat from Humane Society.
Whenever I whistled, she came to me right away.
Now I notice that she also came when my kid played
the recorder or harmonica or guitar.
Is this a natural thing for cats to respond to music
or is it just my cat?
Thanks. Hung.

In an earlier article, hu...@sparc.SanDiegoCA.NCR.COM (Hung Nguyen) says...

One thing I think we must all recognize is that cats and
dogs all have very unique personalities. And, of course,
they have extremely accute hearing. One of mine will come
FLYING to the couch where I work on the computer as SOON as
he hears the sounds of the computer booting up ... he hops on
the couch and flops over on his back so that I will rub his
belly ...

The other cat thinks he is a dog [because he grew up with them, and
is snuggled between two of them next to me right now] ... he seems to
come when I call his name ... seems to understand things I say to him,
almost as a dog does ...

They are all very different. Ive never seen a cat respond to music
as you have described, so perhaps you just have a very musical cat.
Perhaps you ought to name your cat appropriately ... Cat Stevens?
Meowzart? Mama Katz?

Oh, that brings back memories of my Morkie. He was an indoor/outdoor cat
who always came running when I whistled. He was the only cat I ever had
who came when he was called. How I miss him still! (RB 5-23-95)

I don't know about music in general, but my cats also come to me when I
whistle for them. Of course, I grew up mostly with dogs & always whistled
for them, so the kitties may have just learned that whistling is my way of
calling them (at first I would whistle & then call their names, now I can
just whistle). Then again, there's always the fact that I may be offering
them a treat ;)

After having my current cat for 8 years, I was surprised to discover she
responded to my whistling. I don't commonly whistle, and my cat came to
me as a kitten, she was never really exposed to whistling prior to one
evening when a sudden urge to whistle while I read came upon me. I find
that if I make a particular pitch of whistle she is almost certain to
come running from whatever she may have been doing. (most likely
napping) The only other sound she is more likely to respond to is the
sound of a small tin can opening. :-)
