We have just moved into an apartment and the apartments are layed out in
such a way that everyone has a ground level entrance whether you live upstairs
or downstairs. For each downstairs apartment entrance, there is the upstairs
apartment entrance, right next to it. Well...the problem is that
we live on the upstairs and our downstairs neighbor has a dog which goes
outside. We have a cat who NEVER goes out. Our neighbor frequently sits
outside his doorway with his dog to relax.
Can anyone give me advice on how to prevent us from tracking fleas in with
us? The neighbor has a very large doormat outside. Currently we have no
doormat and are wondering if we should or should not get a doormat.
Would fleas just be attracted to the doormat? Or would the doormat prevent
us from tracking the fleas inside with us. Should we get one for the outside,
inside, or both? Is there a certain material that would be a better choice -
maybe one that repels fleas?
Thanx in advance for any advice/opinions/comments.

Fleas are actually fairly species-specific, so unless they are really
*starving* (haven't been near their target species lately) they usually don't
bother other species too much. That's why our pets can have fleas without us
being eaten alive (well *most* of us :-) I doubt your cat will be too bothered
by *dog* fleas. A doormat made of cedar, or stuffed with it, might help repel
the nasty critters. (But boy! if the neighbor loses his dog, or takes it on
vacation...look out! After a week or so, dog fleas won't wait to get your cat.
Your legs will be black with them before you ever reach your place... As a kid
I was once the first one in the house to walk over the dog's rug after a
vacation, and I looked like something out of an old-time cartoon! Yuck!)
