We have a sweet DMH torby female named Heidi, we adopted her from the
SPCA in 1987.

She is mostly dark grey, with black, brown and white colouring. I know
calico's are tri-coloured, but what about four colours? She seems like a
tabby to me, but minus the stripes.

So, once again, what is the history etc. of Torbies?

Thanks,

Norm

Never heard of it myself. By definition a tabby has stripes sounds like
someone took tortoise shell and tabby and made up a new word. who told you
she is a Torbie??

That's what my vet put on her file when he first saw her. Go figure.

did she tell you that too? If not I would suspect just sloppy hand
writing!

I think the word is "tortie," not "torby." It's short for tortoiseshell,
because the markings resemble the markings on a tortoise's (turtle's) back.

Hi,

From what I have read about Torbies is that they are a classic tabby with
orange patches mixed in. They must have the tabby stripes to be a torbie
(tortie/tabby).
Here is a link so that you can see what a Torbie looks like.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, cute pictures. BTW, are all torbies female? My Heidi fits your
description, she's just a DMH but she does have those nice ear tufts.

Hi Norm,
Yes, most Torbies are females. Just like most of them are Maine Coon or a
Maine Coon mix. The description of Heidi I would guess that she has some Maine
Coon in her. There are not very many breeds that have the hairs on the tips of
their ears, like that. I am glad that I was able to help with you question.
Thanks for the compliments.

Hi. A torbie is correct. A tortie is short for tortoiseshell. A torbie is short
for a patched tabby. Classic and mackeral tabbies all differ in how they are
marked - mostly by how the stripes are. I have an adopted stray brown DSH
patched torbie and she has really unique markings.

Thanks Steph. Heidi is a DMH torbie, she has sort of stripes on her head
plus swirls of brown, orange, black, and grey. Are all torbies as sweet
as my Heidi? She's got ear tufts like a Main Coon, but goes limp like a
rag doll when held. Very trusting kitty.
