hi, my name is David. i've been perusing the posts for a few
days now. i've got four kitties. i didn't really have room for
the fourth one, but my friend was moving to Seattle, and her
non-neutered 9-12 mo old kitten who'd been missing for 3 months
showed up the night before she left, and while i was visiting
her. since she'd never gotten him neutered, shots, or on a
flea-management program, i said i'd adopt him and give him a home
and anything he could ever want. so he's been cut, has all his
immunizations, and gets a monthly squirt of Advantage. his name
is Bagheera (my friend named him). here's the only pic i have of
him: http://bmeworld.com/myneedle/bagheerafloor.jpg.

i have another boy; he's about a year old. he's a gorgeous
orange Tabby by the name of Torbjörn (i named him). it's Nordic;
i have no idea what it means, if anything.

my second girl is named Luna (she came with that name). she's an
odd-eyed white, whom i suspected at first was partially deaf.
i'm not sure that she isn't, but she responds when i call her, so
i'm not worrying about it. she's got one blue eye, and one green
eye. she's a rescue kitty (this is her fourth home), and i've
had her for about a year and a half. here's a pic of Luna,
Torbjörn, and Hannelore:
http://bmeworld.com/myneedle/mykids2.jpg.

my first baby is Hannelore. i've had her since she was five
weeks old. a man was giving her away in the same park where my
niece was celebrating her second birthday. Hannelore just
celebrated her third birthday on August 12 (the day i decided
would be her birthday). here's a picture of her at seven weeks:
http://bmeworld.com/myneedle/Hannelore.jpg.

having said all that, here's my question:
what collars are best? Luna's got a Coach collar that i got on
ebay. she's been wearing it for over a year now. Torbjörn has
an expensive ($7) collar that i got from Petco, and has had it on
the whole time i've had him, and there haven't been any problems.
it's one of those break-away collars (snaps apart by squeezing
the clasp). Hannelore lost hers (all of them) quite some time
ago. she had the same type of collar that Torbjörn has. she's
lost three of them. oh, and three sets of tags (which cost me
$15 to replace each time - that's right $66 - price includes
collars - down the drain). Bagheera was wearing his just fine,
but when i came home from work two days ago, he wasn't wearing
his collar (all kitties are indoor/outdoor kitties), which means
that his tags are MIA as well.

i guess i should also mention that since i brought Bagheera home,
in addition to all the other problems a new kitty in the home
creates, Hannelore has been spending her time under the
neighbour's house behind me. and won't come home. i feed her
daily in my garage.

i'm primarily concerned about the collars - what would y'all
suggest? i don't want to keep throwing money away - money that
might be better spent on my car payment, or rent, or groceries,
including cat food (the three that stay around the house all
split a 3 oz can of Fancy Feast in the morning, which they get on
top of their dry food; Hannelore gets a full can since she's
outside 24/7, in addition to dry food).

notice that Bagheera and Hannelore are both black kitties. does
this have anything to do with them both losing collars? i'm
pretty much at wit's end regarding this. i don't want to waste
my money, yet i'm concerned about my kitties getting picked up
and not being able to be identified as mine. Luna has a
microchip implanted in her (was there before i got her), so if
she loses her collar, it's conceivable that she'll be returned to
me without any problems. should i just bite the bullet and get
microchips for the other three?

any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you for reading (if
you've gotten this far).

Hi David,

Your babies are all beautiful. With the constant replacement cost of collars and tags you
may bemonetarily further ahead to have them all microchipped.

thank you. i'm really quite blessed.

thanks. i'll call around and see what kind of prices i can get.
Luna's in the national database as well. something weird
happened when i was registering her with the national database.
i filled out the form correctly, and got a confirmation letter
from them which asked me to verify all the info they had. they
had Luna listed as a white, male dog. i made the necessary
changes and resubmitted, and never heard from them again. that
was nearly two years ago. i hope everything's ok.

Collars are well-worth the price. If an individual finds your cat and
doesn't bother taking it to a vet to have it identified, the collar
will be a more likely reason to have the cat returned to you.

I wouldn't ANY collar on a cat that isn't stretchable. I once saw a
cat at an SPCA that got away from its owner when it was a kitten, and
its neck grew and the collar grew right into its skin, almost choking
it to death. Also, stretchable collars are important if your cat gets
caught in a tree. Even if you have to replace a cat collar a few
times a year, Kitty is well worth the price.
