Advice: Apparently Q-tips resemble cat food.

Well, this is the first time I have ever posted, but I am desperate
for advice. I am owned by two male cats, Pepper and Simba. Both are
a little over a year old. Simba has always had a strange affinity for
Q-tips…usually I get the ones with the cardboard "stick" between the
cotton poufs on each end. Occasionally when I get ready for work in
the morning I will let Simba play with one on the bathroom floor.
Usually he just bats them around and then sits on them. However, last
time the store was out of the regular Q-Tips and I had to get the ones
with the plastic stick. I did not want Simba to chew the plastic so
he has had no q-tips in a month or so. Then this morning I was
getting ready for work and had the bathroom drawer with q-tips in it
open. Simba stole a q-tip and before I could get it away from him he
bit the plastic stick in half and ate it! The part he at was about
half an inch long, including the cotton tip. I immediately gave him a
double helping of hairball remedy in the hopes it will help the q-tip
pass. However, the more I sit at work the more I worry the plastic
could hurt him somehow. I plan to check his "deposits" tonight and
see if it has passed. How long should it take to pass? If it does
not pass through his system, what should I watch for to determine if a
trip to the vet is needed? I am trying to avoid the vet as I DO NOT
LIKE the current vet the cats see and the next closest vet is an hour
away. Any advice?

Call the vet. Call another vet if you don't like your current one. That's
the only sensible advice, and the only good advice you're going to get here.

It is time to lock up your Q-Tips. While I agree with "Jon C" about going
to the Vet in this situation, I strongly disagree that he is the only source
of good advice on this newsgroup.

I meant on this subject. There's tons of great advice here, of course, but
nothing anyone says here is really going to change the fact that this
woman's cat ate some sharp plastic.

Well, thank you for the advice. It turns out that he must have
vomited it back up after I went to work and the half q-tip was found
in a puddle of vomit on the kitchen floor. On a side note, I now know
what cat vomit looks like…yuck! Neither of my boys has ever thrown up
or left a hairball before…needless to say they will continue to get
hairball remedy as I did not enjoy cleaning up the mess! Oh...I will
be finding a new vet, as when I called the usual to ask him about the
q-tip situation he decided the best course of action was to treat me
like an over protective idiot that worries to much about her babies –
what a nasty man!
