Seeing as how another cat forum they are doing much to talk about dogs
(which is pretty stupid since it is a cat's newsgroup and should be about
cats not dogs), I am wondering if there was anyone out there who has sworn
an allegience to have a cat only household? I told my cat that this will be
a cat only household. Is there anyone out there that doesn't like dogs but
loves cats?

I have a cat only mentality. I don't like dogs. They smell and you have to wash
them and they seem so dumb. But, of course, I help out lost dogs when I see
them out there.

I had a dog when I was a kid. The neighbor complained and the dog catcher came
and killed him. The dog attacked what he interpreted as an intruder. Blood all
over the door. Later on, there was a cat who decided to use the shed to give
birth. A week later her eye was popped out in a fight. A week later we moved
and I never saw her again. Some people live their life moment by moment. Mine
seems to be from trauma to trauma.

No, I've not swore an allegiance to cats but they are pretty high on my list of
acceptable life forms.

CPS.
I never met a cat I didn't like.

I agree with you on the dogs part. They smell, need constant attention and
are too damned obedient. Cats are more independent which is one of the
reasons I love them so much.

I actually do like dogs, but don't have the patience to care for one right
now. I'm too lazy to walk/play with a dog at the moment, and to worry about
them being let out to go potty. My cats require much less work. : )

I have to admit, there are times when I feel I could use a vacation away from
cats. Of course, I feel the same way about people so... But, between my cats,
my parent's cat, and the feral colonies, I'm caring for and saying "Hello baby,
how are you today" to 22 cats.

But, this feeling goes away as soon as I see their faces.

absolutely. i have nine cats in my household. my commitment to them is that
they do not have to put up with stupid dogs in their lives. mine is an "only
cats please" household. i don't mind dogs but they are stupid and
destructive. cats are simply smarter & easier to live with.

I have two dogs right now in the house (I'm still living w/ my mother while I
go to school) and I love them to death, but I just find them to be way too much
work so I'm pretty sure that when I get my own place it will be strictly
kitties :)

True but it'd be very hard for me to go out of town and leave my cat alone.
I plan on getting another cat this year but have no idea how my cat will
react as she has been the only cat for the past 4 years. I had planned on
getting a kitten which will seem less threatening to her and I have
re-assured Isis that she will always be top cat. I live in a one bedroom
apartment so I have no idea on how I can keep the cats apart while I
introduce them.

On the rec.pets.cats.health+behav they are pretty upset with me because I
reminded them it was a cats newsgroup and not a dogs newsgroup. As a result
someone told me I was cold hearted and the others were probably hoping I'd
just leave the newsgroup entirely. I can agree with you on the dogs being
dummer. I see cats as being more intelligent, more independent and a lot
more beautiful than dogs. Dogs are too damned obedient while cats can think
for themselves. I used to be a dog person but when I finally got a cat I
became a cat person and have decided to stick with it. Maybe I was a cat
person all along and just didn't know it.

I find it hard to believe that people actually can actually compare dogs to
cats. They are two completely different animals, it would be like comparing
rodents and birds. You can be a cat person or a dog person without actually
having to insult dogs or cats as a whole.

Both animals can be extremely loyal companions who will love you no matter
what. They also can both be downright nasty, nippy/scratchy, etc and won't
like you no matter what you do.

If you want an animal that you make a life with then get a dog, ie for the
outdoorsy types who like a companion or a protector of home and body.

If you want an animal that makes a life with you then get a cat. It'll be
there when you come home (hopefully), will come to you when it wants to and
will let you know when it wants something.

The only reason I don't have a dog now is that I work too far away from home
to come home and take 'em out at lunch. I got a cat thinking they are more
independent, need less care and work, etc., but realize now that my cat
needs just as much affection and attention as a dog and I do feel bad that
he's home alone for most of the day. If I could go back, I would have
gotten two to keep eachother company. ((My boyfriend has a cat, so when we
finally live together we'll have two, that's why I don't get another now,
then I'd have three, too many for me)) When I go away for a long weekend I
make sure to have my sister check in and hang out w/him. I hate how people
think "oh, it's just a cat, leave it enough food and water".

All IMHO

I agree. I consider myself a cat person, but I do like dogs and am happy to
play with other people's dogs or those at the shelter. My SO was more of a
dog person (until he met my cat Fluffy-ha!), but still didn't mind my cats
at all.

Of course cats need love and attention, too. I have two right now, and I
feel better knowing that they have each other for company while I work.
They aren't the best of friends, but they do play together occasionally.
When I'm gone I always have my parents come and feed/check on my cats. I'm
sure they'd be okay with just food and water, but I want someone to actually
see that they are alive and well.

You can compare the two. I think cats are more beautiful, more intelligent
as well as independent. Yeah they can be affectionate as well but it is on
their terms just like with humans. I know Isis has in the past been known to
follow me from room to room. Now she does that less and just does her own
thing. That is what having a kitty is all about and I wouldn't have it any
other way. There are many advantages to being a servent to royalty.

I am definately a cat person. The woman I end up must be a cat person since
I don't like dogs. I agree that cats need love and affection but you must
remember that cats only need it on their terms and not on the human's.

tremendously so, but I don't "dislike" any animal.

Hehe, my Isis does the exact same thing... I always thought it was funny

Yes - this household!
My cats HATE dogs and my oldest tom cats actively attacks them (on the rare
occasion a visitor has brought one to the house) which is a bit embarrasing
"sorry my cat beat up your dog but...." My partner hates dogs with a
passion - I don't mind them myself (so long as they belong to some-one else)
although we are not exactly "cat-only" we have a couple of goldfish & a
loach (if they count). The kids want a rabbit but I don't think its fair -
the poor thing would live in perpetual terror - so I guess its cats & more
cats

I like living things period. There is as much variance in personality among
dogs as there is with cats. I have known dogs that are very cat like and I
have a Mainecoon that I swear is a bear or a raccoon... very uncat like. I
had a cat that was so much like an Australian shepherd I had once that I
swear he was reincarnated from the old boy (they both loved to fetch and
were king of the lions).

I will say that I have wondered if my dogs have liked me mostly for what I
give them and would readily have adopted someone that gave a better handout.
I never wonder about that with my cats. Dogs seem more opportunistic (camp
followers waiting for the dropped piece of meat) while cats seem to really
be just seeing you as part of the pride (and yes domestic cats have the same
social characteristics of lions rather than that of the lone tigers). Mine
follow me just to be where I'm at and never expect food "treats" or payment.

You often hear get a cat if you don't have enough time for a dog. Both need
attention and time. If you get a cat because you think it is something to
have around like a plant that just needs food and water then you are really
never going to be part of that pride and have the pleasure of learning who
they are. That is basically what happens with people that don't like cats.
They have never been part of the family (pride) and only know cats in the
most abstract way. My step-father who claimed to dislike cats before he
became part of our family was cared for by one of our cats when he became
ill. She would not leave his side while he was sick and they became the
best of friends. She tolerated us but she considered him the king. That
was the end of him not being a cat person.

So yes, I do have an obvious bias towards cats but I don't understand
someone excluding any animal from potentially being a friend.

That is ok but I love cats and am not a fan of dogs. I don't know of any
dogs that are catlike. A cat is a cat and they are more intelligent and I
feel much more beautiful animals. Dogs are much too obedient wheras cats are
independent and definately think more for themselves.
