Q's eye was looking funny. Had a discharge and he was tearing up. He had
his old spunk (which was sorely missed) and acted normally. I thought it
was just the aftermath of the upper respiratory infection so I dismissed it
for a day or two. Then I researched the groups for posts of eye discharge
and infections. Found out that I have a serious problem. Then I
immediately scheduled a vet appointment, ( a new vet, mind you, since we
moved clear across the county), Q has herpes and an ulcer in his eye. Just
great. So, here are the options they gave me. (This is funny now, but it
SO wasn't funny then) One, they can have this wildly expensive surgery on
the eye or two, they can remove the eye. (((Okay, here is where my activity
in cat news and support groups paid off once again. I have a friend and
fellow meowmie to 4 kitties who had a similar problem with her kitty
Mirabelle. I called her on my cellphone and she told me to ask for the
antibiotic drops. She said that a vet offered the same 2 expensive
alternatives when she tearfully chose to have the eye removed. Something
told her to get a second opinion, and it turns out that Mirabelle's, eye
could be treated with antibiotics!!!!)) I asked for the antibiotics, they
look surprised when I asked, but said "Well, I guess you've found another
option." I got the antibiotics, awoke every 4 hours to give treatment all
weekend and Q's eye is on its way to good health. It's wide open,
functional, and clear. His eye is very slightly red, but it has improved
dramatically and his second lids don't show swelling anymore. I just wanted
to thank all of you, even though you didn't do anything, for being a part of
a group so informative and supportative. I hope that someone will read my
post, remember my story and know that they are not alone when they hear
something from a vet that doesn't jive right. Don't be afraid to ask
questions and research. Just an update.

PS: Hi, Pixie

Knows that he gets his next dose at lunch,
Ali

Wow! Good for you to be so proactive. I'm glad Q's eye is better, but we will
send some purrs anyway--and a few purrs for you to catch up on sleep, too. (Pam
and Charlie and PacoBell)

YES!!! Supposedly yet another ailment contracted in that spithole. Q was
only there a week, think of how sickly the other animals that they adopt are
there! The poor things. They kept telling me that its sleepy stuff in his
eye. Sleepy stuff my a$$.

Thanks Pam, I just don't like the fact that a VERY SMALL FEW vets use scare
tactics. Vets are just like human doctors, once you get a good one...hold
on for dear life. I'm not worried about my sleep, I just want Q to be the
way he was. It doesn't matter how many nights of broken sleep may come.

I understand. I've spent nights with ailing kitties, dogs, babies...somehow,
nothing matters so much as seeing them get better. Still, I know the value of
sleep...take care of yourself as weel as Q.

Dr. David Suzuki here in Canada was the first person I heard
use the term "Speciesism" in a manner similar to "racism." It's a
matter of expanding one's circle of acceptance and recognising the
life force of other "gentle beings" with whom we share the
universe. The "emotionally challenged" have a hard time
understanding that.

Thank you! I had never ever seen this "sleepy stuff" in his eye before.
And all he does is sleep! I would have seen it in the past!

I don't believe this! Herpes? In his eye? Will he have to be permanently
separated from Miss Moneypenny?

Anyway, I'm glad Q is getting better. Could I send over Kitty Schottland to
look after him? She is a Caretaking Kitty with the Catmerica Volunteer
Nurses Corps.

Oh please do!!!! His eye looks wonderful! But the vet didn't say I had to
keep him away from moneypenny permanently. She said its like when we have a
cold sore.
(Not the Valtrex type). However, I do want to know how long to continue
giving his medications since his eye is now clear, normal and fully
functional. Secondly, is the eye ulcer (the little bubble) going to
disappear in time or what? Does anyone know? That new stupid vet is
keeping me in suspense!

[Fluffy dark tortie jumps into teleporter.] Meow, Q! I'm your nurse, Kitty
Schottland. You lie down and I'll take good care of you.

My advice is to come right out and ask the new vet. And don't settle for a
vague answer.
[Imagine that...Pixie can't even stand up to a telephone solicitor and she's
telling Ali to stand up to the vet!]

Same hospital, different vet!!!! Much more informative, much more helpful.
She told me to give him another round of clavamox (which wasn't even
friggin' mentioned by the other vet) to fight inside and out with
antibiotics. She said that he and Moneypenny no longer must endure
separation. AND she said that as soon as that bubble smooths over, continue
for 48 hours afterwards. If not gone, come back next weekend for more meds.
AMAZING!!! More infomation, more care and genuine concern, less money, and
less bullsh!t! Who knew! AND Q didn't pee in his carrier on the way home
from the vet yesterday. Hurray! So now he's on Terramycin, Clavamox (oral
drops), and Adi-something....the pain ointment. But he doesn't even need
the pain ointment usually.

Woohooooooo!

It seems that this vet knew infinitely more about eye ulcers than the other
one. Good for you! And Q!

Debby

P.S. I stood up to a telephone solicitor today!

Sad thing is....it's not even 20 feet. The office design has square exam
rooms forming another square with a core square center where the doctor have
supplies, computer, etc. I saw the second vet numerous times the first
round because everytime my first vet would leave the room, the door would
open to the core room. SHE WAS RIGHT THERE THE ENTIRE TIME typing on the
computer!!! Geez louise.
