My name is Anita Blanchard and I'm an organizational psychology
professor at the University of North Carolina Charlotte.
I am posting this email to let you know that I have been lurking for a
few months and to ask you if I can include rec.pets.cats.community in
my next research project on virtual groups. The purpose of this study
is to better understand if, how and why certain on-line groups become
"virtual communities." For this project, I'd like to post a message
with a link to a web suvery asking about what you do in this group
(e.g., how often you read msgs, post messages, etc) and also what you
think about this group.
I am not collecting email addresses and I will *not* email any
individual group member unless, of course, you email me first with
questions, comments, etc! If anyone objects to my posting a link to
my research survey, then please email me privately or post a message
to the group and I will not include rec.pets.cats.community in my
research. (Although I really hope you do agree to participate! I'm a
cat lover and I love reading messages in this group! I would try to
write this email more appropriately for here, but I need to keep it in
the form my university approves!)
If I do not get a negative response, then in a few weeks, I'll post a
message that has a subject line of something like "UNCC Research
Survey" which will contain a link to the web survey. If you all do
agree to participate in the project then I will keep the group's name
and any members who participate completely anonymous. Also, if you
know of the group's administrator and could direct me to him/her, I'd
be grateful!

Fortunately, there will be only a little hoomin tawk! There will be
much more mouse clicking, which I think will be more fun for all!

Just a quick note to let you know that I feel very protective of this
group. I've been lurking for a while and I want you to know that your
participation in the project will not psychologize you in any way at
all! :-) This is a special group and I want to make sure that I
leave it as I found it! Your participation in the survey will be
anonymous and if I describe the group in any research reports, it will
be in very general terms (e.g., "a newsgroup for pet lovers.")
Truly, I want any experience you have in this project to be positive!
