I'm watching as the terror in your country unfolds.

My heart is in my throat and I'm praying for you all.

My thoughts are especially with our military folk, God bless you.

There are no words, Yowie. Trying to work is impossible. I think I'm
going to go home and hug my cat & my human companion. Just can't make
sense of any of this.

I'm so sorry, I can't believe that this is happening - all those poor people in
those buildings. I wish there was something I could do to help.

It's truly the scariest thing I've ever seen. I was leaving for work when

I hear you Roger. I keep thinking that this must be how my parents and
grandparents felt when they heard about Pearl Harbor.

I wish we could parade them naked through the streets. They want hatred.

Unfortunately, those directly responsible died much too easily. You
can bet that their leaders will be found, but I fear that there
will be a gross overreaction, and as a result, many who are not
responsible will suffer. It is probable that whatever nation that
harbors the leaders, is incapable of direct miltary action on
the USA. The reverse is not true, and a retaliation would be very
one-sided. What worries me is that we might see a return of
the shameful internment camps like we saw in WWII. The occupants
this time might be arabs. Time will tell, but I hope that reason prevails.

Purrs to Cat-rina, as she is feeling bad and meditations too. Today is a

Unfortunately again, now that I'm settling down and not crying for some country
to be nuked, I've realized that all it took was a little cleverness and to
steal away some guns via airport workers. Way too easy. A gang of a 12 could
have pulled it off. My younger brother lives in NYC (heard he's ok via my
parents, but I can't get through myself), and with the *hundreds* of friends he
has there, I wonder how many funerals he'll be attending. Not if, but how many.

I turned on the TV this morning 5 minutes before having to leave and just saw
the flames. Then I got a call 1 hour later on the cell phone from mom telling
my brother was ok. I asked "what from?"... Then she recounted the story to me
including the part of the building collapsing. I had thought bombs were put
aboard the towers and couldn't understand the quantity of flames -- skyscrapers
don't burn. 15,000lbs of jet fuel will.... A little later I got the whole
story.

Unbelievable barbarism.

Most international flights (22) have been allowed to land in the US. Checks
were made if any were hijacked and none were. I bet they all had fighter
escorts! The domestic planes in the air were told that they could land at an
emergency runway or go to their destination, pilot's discretion. Considering
that all remaining domestic flights were expected to land within the 30 minutes
of my hearing the story, I bet most landed ASAP.

Thanks Vicky. All military bases in the US are on top security
alert. I'm not sure when I'm supposed to pick Rob up from work
tonight, or if he'll be able to call me and let me know. My eyes
are raw and tired and I feel as though I have no more tears
within me, though I know I'll cry even more as these events
continue to unfold. Those who set these events in train are the
worst kind of terrorists, cowards. It is one thing to stand up
for your beliefs, even to demonstrate for them, it is another to
punish a country by murdering innocent people, then not having
the balls to own up to what you did. Every time I think of the
terror those who were in those hi-jacked planes felt, knowing
what was going to happen to them, I start crying again. There is
no excuse for the kind of behavior that would permit ANYONE to
harm others like this.

One of the things we've had to face, being in the military, is
how we would handle it if our members had to take the lives of
others. Taking another's life is, and should be, a last resort,
not a way to punish a people for not having the same philosophy
as your group. I'm emotionally tired and not at my best. Maybe
I can express it better after I get over the worst of the
emotional shock of today's events.

Thanks again for your kind words.

I'm afraid for my nieces and nephew in South Carolina. Their father is
Lebanese, and just by virtue of their outward appearance, well, suffice to say
people can be very cruel. Even though they were born here and *are*

Hopefully, people will *think* about this. It is what is in the head that

It's really brought it home to me how closely interconnected we all are. I'm in
England, and have never been to the States, but my closest friend lived in New
York for years, and has friends there, another friend who I see daily is
distraught because her husband has been in the States on Royal Navy business
(he's in the Reserves) and he was actually on a flight to New York when the
news broke. Thankfully he is safe, and on a USA military base now, but she
hasn't seen him for three weeks, and doesn't know when she will see him again.
She was anxious anyway about him going away again to help with the Macedonia
situation, but this has knocked her for six, and she's a resiliant woman. My
husband's best mate at work is a New Yorker, and he's in a state because he
still doesn't know where his father is. And the thing is, no matter where this
had happened, I'd probably have someone there to worry about. It's a small
world, and we're all too much of a family to be doing these things to each
other.

My hope is that, out of all tis tragedy, it will bring decent people of all
races, creeds and countries together as *humans*.

I'm sure it wasn't a country tht started this. Even the most fanatic of
state heads isn't stupid enough to play chicken with a country with nuclear
capability.

That whoever it was chose to attack the Word Trade Towers during working
hours rather than in the dead of night when the material damage would be
high and the people damge be at the minimum tells me exaclty how deranged,
cruel and inhuman the perpetuator(s) is.

Death is far to good for whoever they are.

The one thing you can do is donate blood.

It doesn't matter where you live, DONATE! Here in the Chicago area,
the regional blood banks are committed to supply "certain blood
products" to NYC for the next 6 weeks. I'm certain that other banks
are also going to be supplying NYC and DC over the next few weeks. The
last report I heard, NYC was out of blood *now*, and is getting blood
from other sources. I'm sure DC is similar straits. I've read that
Canadian organizations have been contacted about helping out as well.

The nation was short in blood supplies as it was before this - some
due to the usual summertime drop in donations, some due to fewer
people donating in general. I called a local hospital today about
donating, and they're so jammed now with people wanting to donate
they're actually setting up schedules. AND THEY NEED EVERY DROP!!!!!

To donate you just have to be in generally good health (no cold or
flu-like symptoms), be over 18 years of age (17 with parental
permission; I could have my ages wrong by the way, it could be 17 and
16 with permission), and weigh at least 110 pounds. That's *it*. It's
relatively painless (all I ever feel is the pinch of the needle going
in), it doesn't take long, and contrary to urban legend you can't
catch any diseases by donating.

PLEASE contact your local blood bank or hospital and donate. It's the
one thing that everyone can do right now to help.

killed and injured thousands of people. They have affected the
economic situation and the morale of the entire world. Using our own
planes and people to deal death and chaos is diabolical as it throws
the entire world into unfolding consequences. It is already starting.

I stopped for gas this evening and learned that gas is already
skyrocketing. I guess since we don't know for sure which country did
this evil, oil companies are expecting a shutdown of overseas oil. I
heard that in one part of Oklahoma gas is already $4.99 a gallon!

Other consequences are the rescuers and firefighters and police and
hospital employees getting overworked, not only for the seriously
injured but all the heart attacks and strokes caused by this atrocity.
Here in Colorado Springs, blood donors were lined up in a 4 hour wait,
there were so many. The evil ones don't seem to realize that this kind
of catastrophe pulls our people together and brings out the basic
goodness in most people.

When I first heard this morning, I was terrified. Colorado Springs is
such a target. Cheyenne Mountain with NORAD, Air Force Academy, Ft.
Carson, Peterson Field, Shriever Air Field. And Denver is just as bad
with The Federal Center and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal and more
military bases. And Fitzsimmons and other military hospitals. And
Colorado Springs has a great deal of retired military, many of which
are patients of my home health agency.

At first I was terrified of missiles hitting everything around. Then
the shutdown of airspace came and then I knew the only planes I might
see would be our own flyboys. The amazing Flying Angels! I have
watched their precision flying many times. No enemy could get past
them on alert.

I feel so sad for all the children who have lost parents to this
terror. But I heard they are already setting up counseling for kids.
And many, many churches are holding open prayer meetings. May God have
mercy on the innocent victims and righteous wrath for the
perpetrators.

if you are unable to donate blood for whatever reason, consider donating snacks to
the blood banks for the donors. I read that suggestion on another newsgroup and
thought it was a good idea.

I'm not so sure. While I think it unlikely that there are any governments
or heads of state involved in this incident, I do think that it is at least
possible.

I hope that we can avoid a war, but frankly I am scared that this is the
direction we're heading in. I think many people are afraid that this is
going to escalate into something even worse than it already is, but I'm also
hearing a lot of anger out there, and a desire for revenge. I just hope
that cooler heads will prevail and that no more innocent lives are lost in
retaliatory strikes.

Seanette, My ex-husband worked at Vandenberg (non-military) and we lived in
Santa Maria 1960-68, so I know the anxiety when something like this
happens. The Cuban missile crisis occurred during that time. All my women
friends and I started stockpiling water, food, diapers, etc., and figuring
out a plan of action should we need it. Our husbands, the rocket
scientists, who worked out there told us we were just being silly and
paranoid until they were all given materials at work with evacuation route
and destination plus instructions on what to do to be prepared.

Fortunately, that threat did not last long but it was real and very
frightening. It pains me to think of people who live in countries where
they live with terrorism on a daily basis. And now to have this tragedy
that has had such horrible consequences to so many families and to the rest
of our country.

Oddly enough, my first information about this came through this newsgroup.
I got up about 9 AM Hawaii time, turned on computer, logged onto internet,
went directly to rpca. First posts were questions and concern about what
was happening in the USA. Turned on TV to learn our president was in a
secret location, White House and Capital evacuated. And then coverage of
the devastation.

Here in Hawaii, although physically so far from the center of the horror,
the impact is deeply felt, too. Each island here is a separate county. Our
mayor on the Big Island has shut down schools, malls, etc., not so much
from fear of such terrorists acts here but the belief that at a time like
this families should be together.

Many thanks to all of you friends all over the world for your concern and
prayers for our country. And special thanks to our military and their
families for being there for us, wearing the uniform (wonderful story in
recent thread). And to all the rescue workers on the scene who stayed in
the face of severe danger trying to find and save the injured. My two boys
have fulfilled their military duty but I remember so well my fear during
the Gulf War when my youngest, in Marine Reserves, was on ready-alert, or
whatever the terms. In others words, keep your bags packed and by the door.
And the relief that it was over before he had to go.

Our hearts hurt!

If you aren't eligible to donate go anyway. They still need volunteers to help.
And read elsewhere they could use help with the snacks to boost the blood sugar
on those who donate.

Yes and no. (I remember it, but I was only a little girl, so
the impact wasn't what it was for the adults.) Of course,
all WE had to tell us about it was radio (TV didn't come
along until the postwar years) and our newspapers - we
didn't have the trauma of seeing the actual events in living
color on a screen in our living-rooms! The biggest
difference, though, was that the Japanese attack on Pearl
Harbor was a military force attacking a military base.
(Without a formal declaration of war, which was considered a
breach of International Law at the time, but nevertheless a
military operation.) This was a matter of kidnapping
ordinary civilians, comandeering the planes they were
traveling in, and using them to destroy (mostly) other
ordinary civilians. I suppose the Pentagon can be
considered a military target, but it was NOT a "military"
attack!

True it was a military attack and all that, but in 1941 there was much less
violence broadcasted every day. I think that in proportion it would be
about equal.

I'm just wishing that the horrors of the last day will go away. I still

There are a few other conditions to donating blood. You can't donate if
you've:

*had a tattoo or piercing within the last 6 months

*been to the UK during the whole "Mad Cow" thing

*Been in contact with someone with Hepatitis C in the last 12 months...

I've tried to donate blood on several occasions and I've been turned down
for all of the above reasons. I lived in England from 1994-1997 so I can
*never* donate blood.

However, I can (and will) volunteer to help with the blood drive we're
having at work.....

Actually, ever since I got on the internet, I find it nearly
impossible to get to bed before midnight - and now I have an
upstairs neighbor with the heaviest feet in California (who
keeps even later hours than I do), there's not much point in
trying, because as soon as I start to fall asleep, she
