This was, by far, the hardest thing I've ever done. I can't stop
crying, even though I know I did the right thing. His brother Issa is
not taking it well. He ran off the bed as soon as the vet put in the
final shot, Basho stopped breathing seconds later. I went to pick up
Issa to come say good-bye, but he was afraid of me. He looks *sad*.
We just finished burying Basho in the garden, next to a beautiful
bigtooth maple. We covered him in the bag his favorite flannel sheets
came in. He loved lounging in those during the winter time. One of my
nephews is an artist and I commissioned a painting of Basho
meatloafing on those sheets. I'll pick it up for x-mas.
Thanks everyone for your kind words, purrs and prayers. Basho is now
restored to full health and is being shown around the Bridge by his
"brother" Quetzie and the rpca gang. I told him all about the Bridge
this morning and to take it easy and not start bossing around
everybody on the first day.

Victor and the Fantastic Seven, minus one. :(

This is the most dreadful thing you've had to do but there sometimes comes a
time when it's the right thing. It's what we get for having them in our
lives - the payback when we have to let them go because we live longer than
they do

Why does the ultimate act of love have to hurt so very much?

We're so very very sorry to hear this.

It's always going to be a hard decision, and it's so tempting to try
to put it off, but you put Basho first, as a true friend does.

I'm really sorry, Victor. I'm glad you're not left catless on this
sad day, but each cat we love is irreplaceable. Give Issa lots of
love in the next few days, he'll need it, too. I'm sure he'll come
around when you explain it all to him. Ending pain by saying farewell
is the loving responsible thing to do, but it doesn't change how much
we miss them!

Issa will be comforting _you_ before long.

He was such a good little cat! I'll always remember what vivid blue
eyes he had on his dark face, and how he liked to curl up asleep with
his friends, especially Issa:

Tak, thank you for posting the photos of Basho. Victor, he is absolutely
gorgeous! Here is a poem that I found on the Health and behaviour list:

Farewell, my humans, yet not farewell,
Where I go you too shall dwell.
I am gone before your face,
A moment's time, a little space.
When you come where I have stepped,
You will wonder why you wept.

Purrs and prayers for you. Basho is where he needs to be. Cry when you
must as eventually your heart will be healed as you know you did the right
thing.

Trust us, you did do the right thing, hard as it is. You are a brave
man, and Basho was a brave little soldier. We are so sorry for the
loss of your dear little one. He's in no pain now, and relaxing
comfortably in what I call the Elysian Plains until you come back to
stay. Please give Issa some extra loving and he'll understand. They
just seem to *know*.

Blessed be,
Baha
