My Lillybit has gone missing. She managed to slip out of the house nearly
24 hours ago and hasn't been seen since. Please send major big time homing
beacon purrs this way for her safe return.

Umpteen dozen major purrs, prayers, and doggy-wags are on their way
to lead Lillybit home. And purrayers for her worried Meomie.

Sorry to follow up on my own post, but in case anyone was planning to ask -
yes, I'm doing all the stuff you're supposed to do to find a lost cat. Beth

Lillybit is home, and she's fine.

I moved about a month ago into a new house, and it's new construction with a
lot of construction still going on around here. I went this morning to the
construction crew foreman and he gave me a list of the houses they'd been
working on yesterday and a master key. I went from house to house and
eventually found her in one of them. As I surmised, she wandered in through
an open door, or open garage, and got locked in overnight.

Well, that settles it. I am no longer going to postpone having her (and the
rest of the tribe) microchipped.

Thanks for the purrs, they were very effective. :-)

Frank and Nikki are purring their get-your-furry-behind-home-right-now purrs
and meatloaf meditating for extra effect.

My best wishes, hope she realises there is no place like home soon.

Great news that Lillybit is home safe and sound! Tell me, did you strangle
or kiss her when you found her?! ;) ;)

Microchipping is definately the way to go, but one thing I haven't been
able to work out, is where to register the cats once they are done - in the
UK it is easy as there is a central database, but I'm not so sure where to
go in VA, USA, so if *anyone* in the USA has suggestions, could you either
reply here, or PEM? I'd be most grateful.

Probably telling you to suck eggs here Beth ;), but is there a possibility
of your vet giving a discount on the microchipping for getting them all done
at once? My vet does - I think he knocks off about 5% - 15% per cat
depending on numbers. It's worth asking!

Anyway - glad the little minx is home safe :)

I gave her a great big smooch while telling her what a very bad girl she is.
She, meanwhile, was trying to squirm out of my arms so she could continue on
her great outdoor adventure. She apparently had no idea what the big deal
was, although she was very happy to have access to food and water when she
got home again.

I do not believe that there is a central database - the different microchip
makers each have their own. But IIRC the AVID chip is the most commonly
used so I'd probably go with them. Talk to your vet about it.

I get a discount from my vet anyway, her "best client" discount. Which
basically means that the biggest chunk of her income comes from me, :-P
She's generally over at my house at least once a month, what with Archy's
kidneys, thyroid, blood pressure and bad teeth, and Lillybit just getting
over a nasty UTI, and Maddie's ongoing health issues.... She recently
bought a blood pressure monitor and named it after Archy. At this point she
could build a clinic and name it after Archy!!! :-)

Which reminds me. After several months of working to get Archy stable
enough to (hopefully) successfully undergo anesthesia, he's finally having
his dental procedure this Friday. They're going to yank several teeth.
Please think good thoughts for him.

Well, when I had Brenna 'chipped, my vet did it. They take care of notifying
the company with the information that goes into the database and inserting the
chip. I keep a copy of the information in a safe place and hope I never need to
use it. I was told at the time (about 2 years ago) that there are 2 main
companies doing this and each makes a chip that reads differently, so you know
at the time it's scanned which company has the records. Most large shelters
should have both types of scanner, and a vet's office will have the scanner for
whichever brand of chip they use. I think that the scanner will detect either
chip, but can only read the brand it's programmed for. Hope this helps!

Absolutely!!! Good thoughts and many purrs. Frankly, anesthesia
for our kitties scares the tar outta me. Too much bad stuff has
happened with it. However, it sounds as though you have one terrific
vet who knows just what to do and will bring Archy through just fine!!
Give him some scritches for me and by all means let us know how he
does.

I'll take the details to the vet, and get them to try and sort it out.

That IIRC is what the problem will be with Pet Passports - the USA uses 2 or
3 different coded kinds of chips, and the UK scanners can't read them, so if
you want your pet to travel, then you will need a UK readable chip.

BTW - for those who don't already know... USA/ Canada are joining passports
for pets in Dec 2002 - 98% certain. There is already a lab in Kansas
authorised to do the rabies blood titer counts, and owners are allowd to
start preparing their pets for travel now in anticipation of USA joining the
scheme.

It's great - because my 3 don't have to do quarantine when they come home -
they'll stay with my parents for 6 months after coming out of Belize,
qualify for their passports and then fly home without quarantine! WOOHOO!!
They already have UK passports - but will need American ones. Does that make
them dual nationals I wonder......?

Of course! Frank sends his best BTDT purrs. He seems to get along fine
without all his teeth. Nikki joins in the purrs, though she has all her
teeth left.

Wow. Nikki is turning green with envy. She wants to be a citizen of the
world like her ex-boytoy Robbie. Frank says she can go travel all she wants,
you will never get him (Frank) aboard a plane.

That's great news. Having had one cat who went AWOL and was never
found, I know what you must have been going through in the 24hrs or so
she was missing.

Glad she's home safe and sound.

Beth, aren't you in the greater Seattle area? If so, a good thing to know
is that King County Licensing is offering free microchip with licensing
right now. So you pay $15 for the license (less if you are a senior or
disabled) and get a free chip certificate. Definitely a helluva deal.

Hope this helps!

Oh, poor Polonca! You should have told us, so we could've purred for you.
The purrs helped me enormously when I had to have my chipped tooth fixed,
because I kept thinking of all these cats, meatloafing around the world and
purring, and I felt like laughing, and never felt any pain. Belated purrs,
we hope it wasn't too painful.

I didn't know beforehand what the dentist would do to me. It was almost
painless, but I did feel nauseous for quite some time afterwards. Thanks for
the purrs, it is healing nicely.
Best wishes,
