Hi,

I'm wondering if anybody has any advice to offer. There's a cat stuck in
one of our neighborhood's palm trees. The tree's about 30 feet tall, and
we can't tell exactly where the cat is; we hear it meowing, but we can't
see it. Any suggestions on how we might get it down?

Thanks,
Eric

Sometimes a really good stinky bowl of food at the base is enough. If that
does not work a ladder is next (maybe a tree service would oblige?). Let us
know what happens!!

I read somewhere recently that if you put a can of tuna fish somewhere where
the cat can see it, he should climb down to get it. Let us know what
happens.

Why not call the fire department? For real.

If we knew what we were doing it would not be called research, would it?

I suggest you do what we did and either rent or buy a ladder. If you rent,
you can get one long enough to reach the cat and then return it. The rental
places were closed when we needed to rent one, so we bought one and got the
cat down from a pine tree. She was 40 ft up and a pain to rescue

One of mine went up a tree this spring. She is an indoor only cat but
escaped when I brought my bike in. After about 2 days she came down by
herself. Based on that I would just wait.

A lot of fire departments will no longer perform pet rescues, because
of the risk that a fire or other human-life-threatening emergency
will come along while they are busy rescuing the treed cat.

Two days is far too long for a cat to be without food and water...
.especially if it is hot. I would call a professional. If the fire
department won't get the cat, I'm sure they can refer a service that will.

Thanks for all the advice! We first tried calling the fire department,
but they don't do pet rescues in the area. We also tried just the city
services, but that didn't work either. After a while, the cat poked his
head out of the tree, and we discovered that it was Shaggy, a cat
belonging to one of our neighbors. Right about that moment, Shaggy's
owner appeared and was very relieved to see him; he's been missing for
about a week.

Anyway, with the help of a ladder, Shaggy's owners managed to get him
down. He's spending the night at the vet's with a temperature, but they
think he should be fine. Not sure if he really spent the whole week up
there; I sure hope not though!

Hopefully the lil guy is down by now! I've heard of frogs that sound
amazingly like cats, if it couldn't be seen maybe it was a frog? (not sure
if frogs that sound like cats climb trees) There was a story about a woman
who heard a cat in the wall of her house. Thinking it somehow got in via
the crawl space and couldn't find it anywhere around the spot it seemed to
be coming from, she hired a team to take out part of the siding on her house
to get to where the kitten was "stuck". They found it after much
demolition, only it was a frog. :-)

Yes, that story was on Animal Planet a while ago. The frog sounded a
lot like a young kitten.

Thank you for the update, Eric! I was worried about the kitty and I'm glad
to hear Shaggy has a home and is down also!
