Hi Both Groups,

I don't know if you dog people got it too, but on the
rec.pets.cats.anecdotes there was a *HUGE* flap about the poisonous
qualities (or the lack thereof) of Febreze on dogs.

Fluffy chewed my Febreze bottle just a bit ago. I don't know if she digested
any, but she did loosen the lid enough to get the remains of the contents
onto the carpet.

Proctor and Gamble's "help line" only operates between 7am and 7pm (Its
10:30pm here) and the recorded message directed me to the poisons centre.
The poisons centre rudely informed me that they don't deal with dogs,
contact a vet <click>.

There is no "emergency vet" listing you can get by dialling directory
assistance (I don't have a Yellow Pages here), so I asked for *any* vet in
the idea that perhaps *their* answering machines might have an emergency
number listed.

Thankfully the vet clinic I rang was just cleaning up after an emergency
surgery. (I was *sooo* grateful to speak to someone genuinely helpful and
concerned - Onya Albion Park Vetinary Clinic!) He said that because its such
a new product here in Australia, he doesn't hasn't had any experience with
it, and because the ingredients listed on the bottle are only generic, he
can't tell me whether its likely to be poisonous or not. He reassured me by
saying that if it *is* poisonous, I'll be able to see symptoms, but there's
not much I can do but to try to encourage Fluffy to drink plenty of water.
(How?), and keep a close eye on her overnight.

I'm just soooo worried. I'm in tears. Its my fault I wasn't supervising her
at the time (I was reading a book in the loungeroom) and I had no idea she
could get stuff off the *middle* of the table. I don't know why on earth I
didn't put the damn spray bottle away in the first place.

So I'll let you folk know tomorrow if Febreze is actually a danger. She's
bouncing around like normal at the moment, but then again, I poured the
wretched Febreze on my hand as I was picking the bottle up and now my hand
is stinging.

I know its less than 24 hours before I know either way, but in the meantime,
can I please get some prayers and purrs and wags? I feel like a terrible
fur-mum.

Wow, you poison control gave you THAT kind of reaction?! I called because
one of my dogs started eating a few daipers in a trash bag that had made it
to the porch, but not all the way to the trash can on the other side of the
fence. I called poison control here in the States (Washington DC) and they
said it used to be poisonous (old daipers) but not anymore00different
ingrediants. Maybe you should call over here if you can afford the long
distance call. They are definately nicer and seem to care about all animals
(human or otherwise).

As far as the Febreze goes, I think you are ok. Best of luck!

This doesn't surprise me much. Proctor and Gamble is *evil*. I've been
avoiding buying their products for years, because of their animal testing
practices.

Oh Yowie, you poor thing. I don't know what to tell you except call your
regular vet as soon as you can. In the meantime - I would think that if
dear little Fluffy actually managed to ingest some of the stuff, her mouth
would be burning and she'd be drinking water like crazy. But regardless -
maybe you could take her out in the yard and wash her mouth out really well
with a garden hose, or something.

I remember the Febreze flap very vividly. P&G here in the US now features
pets prominently in their TV ads and makes a point of saying that Febreze is
safe to use around pets. But, even assuming this is true, there is a big
difference between coming in contact with fabric that has been sprayed with
Febreze, and actually *ingesting* Febreze.

As a newie to the group (relatively), I missed the original cats & Febreze
thing. What was the conclusion? I've been using it regularly (cos it even
works on Cleo's mutilated earthworms) and not seen any ill effects, but
could they be building up over time?

Just a short note, Yowie, to let you know both you and Fluffy are in

I remember that whole thing very clearly, and I also remember reading
that it was a false rumor and was debunked. I don't believe it is dangerous
to pets.

Of course, if my cat ate it, I'd still keep an eye on her, just in
case, and that's what you should probably do. And the advice to get her
to drink lots of water is a good one, and won't hurt anyway. But it's
most likely that you have nothing to worry about.

Take care,

Fluffy is fine this morning, thankyou God!

Ta for all the thoughts - it was a rather sleepless night.

I don't want to start the Febreze thing again, but Despite Proctor & Gamble
being useless and the Poison centre here being worse, I don't think Febreze
is *highly* toxic.

Thanks everyone,

Yowie

According to the Febreze website, it's made from corn. Now how you get
corn to taste bad and burn the skin, you gotta wonder....

I'm sharing in your gratitude that Fluffy is fine, but I'm incredulous that

Talent? I dunno. I do want to know why DW's friend would want to eat the
stuff. Its almost as bad as the Biology teacher I had in high school that told
the class that the original pest strip was non-toxic, and preceded to prove it by
eating it in front of us. We do use febreze on our odors, and it hasn't affected
the cats any.

Hi Gene, I read "read" as it was meant to be read and not as if it was rude.
I have a habit of assuming the best about people, and would never even have
thought about the other interpretation if you hadn't mentioned it.

Fluffy is currently destroying my hot water bottle. Once it got a hole it
was a "designated dog toy" and she is welcome to it.

Thankis for your kind words.

Hello Yowie

I'm glad Fluffy is OK ... the things our little wretches put us
through! It's so scary. If I were you I'd be writing a stern letter to
the marketing department of P&C. Another to the director or whoever of
the Poisons Information Centre wouldn't go astray either (or I might
just be in a stern letter writing mood today).

Not sure where you're based, but there is a really good after hours vet
at Enfield (near Strathfield in Sydney). It's a little expensive - last
time Lucy pulled a dramatic stunt in the middle of the night there was
about a $75 charge just for picking up the phone. Great cat-side
manner, though.

Sydney Uni vet hospital is also fabulous (cat specialists and
everything) but only open 8-5 on week days. They might be able to help
you work out what is in Febreze and whether it is potentially harmful.

Cheers

Vicki

On their commercials here in the States they say they are the only product
of that type to be endorsed and approved by the ASPCA. My vet recommended
it to get rid of doggie odors in the carpet. It's supposed to be perfectly
safe for pets with normal use, now, if Fluffy drank the whole bottle, that
is a different story. I didn't see the original post so I don't know the
whole story

Fluffy didn't show any symptoms whatsoever - infact, her IQ may have gone up
an iota just by random chance :-)

Unfortunately I don't know where to get a list of ingredients easily, but
the vet I did eventually talk did tell me that it was probably OK.

For some reason a whole bunch of older posts just appeared the other day. I
dunno why though. I didn't realize they were old, I just thought the ng had
been unusually active during the few days that I hadn't been online.
