I've been lurking here for a while. I'm mostly familiar with keets and
toos, but I'm getting a tiel on August 16th.
This is a six month old bird and although I will be taking care of the
maintenance end, it will be a "friend" for my five year old. Most people
would say my son is too young for a bird, but he is shy, relatively
stationary, very gentle, and I figured a bird would appreciate the attention
of his non-stop talking. Also, he has had an incredible interest in birds
since he was about two years old. He is a very dedicated child and does not
easily loose interest in anything.
The problem: Now my eight year old wants a canary.
I tried explaining the some of the characteristics of canaries to my eight
year old, but he is insistant. I know, knowing my eight year old, that this
canary will be mine within a month or two. I wouldn't mind, but I hate the
idea of keeping a bird in a cage all the time and would rather have
something more sociable and portable like my too was. (Yes, I really
enjoyed meeting the demands of my too!) A dear friend of mine, who gave me
the too, passed away a few years ago. She had several types of birds,
including Amazons and African Greys and I got to know them all. I really
wanted a grey and I still do.
We will definately be getting another bird in addition to the tiel and I'd
like some opinions as to what type of bird would be best. Both birds will
be left out of their cages while we are home and the stove is off, which is
several hours a day.

Anyway, my daughter (now 13) has a very sweet and gentle peach-faced
lovebird who is a delightful little pet. She (we don't really know her
gender) has never bitten anybody and is fun and cute and very smart. She's
always good for a chuckle, and absolutely loves cuddling as well. Pics at
http://www.owly.net/Pix/PunkinCasey2.jpg if you're interested :). I
wouldn't have considered a lovebird but for the last few years little Punkin
has been a great friend to Casey through thick and thin.
Good luck! :)

Would you believe it? I never even considered a lovebird! I thought they
were more fragile emotionally than cockatoos and that they had to have
another lovebird with them at all times or they would die. Thanks for
replying and the link. I'm going to show my eight year old the pictures and
then make him wait a while. His birthday is in November and that will give
me time to see how he is with my five year-olds tiel and do more research so
I know what their care needs are... if he approves, which I think he will.
Thanks.
Just a little warning about lovebirds... they CAN get nasty and bitey.
They are generally fearless, outgoing and stubborn: big personality and
temper in a tiny body. Some people call them 'the evil ones'... and for a
good reason. Then again, you could be lucky enough to end up with a
wonderful, loving 'evil one', as did Casey and Owly.
