I have a 11 week old Timneh African Grey. Lately, I have been a little
bit concerned about her weight. At 8 weeks old, she weighed 264 grams,
at 9 weeks 305 grams, at 10 weeks 300 grams and at present (11 weeks)
285 grams. She seemed to have been gaining weight until around 9-10 week
period and then started to lose weight. She also seemed to have lost her
apetite somewhat. A couple of weeks back she used to run for her food
and eat until her crop was completely full. Recently, she has been
playing all sorts of games when we try to feed her and does not want to
eat her full meal. Other than that, she is extremely active and runs all
over the house. Her droppings also look the same as before.

I understand that just before the weaning process (which I think is
pretty close for her and should happen in the next couple of weeks), she
is supposed to lose some weight. Is the weight loss that she is going
through because of that ? Or is it something to be concerned about ? Is
there any site on the internet that gives the weight charts for Timnehs
? I have seen charts for Congo African Greys but none for the Timnehs.
Is a weight of 285 grams normal for a Timneh of 11 weeks of age ?

Thanks in advance.

This is a classic example of why a bird should be weaned before
being sold. Inexperience kills. My suggestion is to learn
how to hand feed your bird.

This is precisely why you should not buy an unweaned bird, but since the
damage is already done you are going to need some help.

The very first thing you need to do is contact an avian vet. Yuor little guy
is most likely starting to wean, and unless you are giving him the proper
transitioning foods....hes not getting enough to eat. It is typical for a
baby to lose weight when it is weaning. This is a stressful time for a chick
and can be especially stressful for an inexperienced hand-feeder. Get some
help!

And again people................buy em' weaned!!!!!!

Just my 2 cents.

Yes, people should by weaned birds. However, stress from leaving the
breeder, transport, and change of environment. Can all make a weaned bird
quickly regress into a bird in need of a feeding a day or even more.
