I don't know how many canary breeders there are reading this group but
if any read this I sure would love an answer.

I have four pairs building nests right now and am sort of at a loss of
what to use for nesting material. The lady birds currently
constructing nests all LOVE fluffed up pieces of cotton balls the most
and do not want to use the other materials I give them. I am mixing
nesting hair in the cotton myself as much as possible but they try to
pick out just the cotton. One particularly stubborn female made a
nest just out of sisal string and nesting hair. I gave her cotton to
line it with and the next morning all that was in the nest was the
cotton - she had thrown the rest out!

They refuse shredded paper, they even turn down feathers robbed out of
a feather pillow!

I am worried about them using too much cotton. I am scared that if
they continue to sit tightly on the nest after the eggs have hatched
that enough air will not be able to circulate through to the babies.
Do any of you have any experience with a similar situation?

I breed canaries and I put a felt nest liner into the wire nests. Then I
cut up
1 or 2 inch pieces of either cotton or wool yarn and sisal twine. I add
dryer lint to their cage once they get a good start on the nest. I allow
my canaries to fly in
their bird room (they take turns) and I put stuff out for the hens to
gather and
take back to their nests. They seem to really enjoy that.

Hi Sharon, I also raise a variety of canaries and have found that they
love goats beard moss, cleaned and dried of course. I'll send you a
free sample if you just give me an address. Cindy
