Help. I took my 7 mnth old Umbrella to the vet last week because she was
sneezing and acting subdued. He heard a few lung sounds and saw a little
mucus so put her on amoxicillin. After a week she was all cleared up and
acting like herself. That last 3 days. Yesterday she slept all day and
today she is not eating, sleeping all the time, acting really weird. I
called the vet and he said to keep her on the amoxicillin (I had stopped
yesterday) and watch her. I am suppose to bring her in tomorrow. He is
the only vet in town with any bird experience. Does anyone have some
ideas as to what is happening that might help us? Please e mail me as it
is the quickest way for me to get answers. Thanks for any help or ideas
as to what is going on and what to watch for.

Susan,

A lot of bird owners, breeders, and avian vets use our products for just
this reason. We strongly recommend seeing a good avian vet ASAP but in the
meantime get as much information as possible. When you have time you may
want to surf our site at www.microbioproducts.com/avianb.html/.

Good luck to both you and your Umbrella, I know what a stressful time this
can be.

Did I read somewhere that if you are on antibiotics for a period of time,
that you can get a yeast infection? And then you have to be treated for
that. I think the same thing was applied to birds in this artical. (sp)
Maybe you should check this out with your vet also.

My vet always has me bring the bird in for a recheck something like 24 -
48 hours after the last dose of antibiotic to check a gram stain. If it's
"too clean" (ie, not even the normal number of bacteria) she has me dose
the bird with Benebac to help prevent yeast infections.

One of my tiels did have a yeast infection once following a course of
antibiotics and was quite ill.

BTW, I've heard that Benebac only contains *killed* bacteria and so
doesn't really do any good at all. Does anyone know?
