I have heard a Green Winged Macaw screeching from seven city blocks away on an
otherwise calm summer evening. Hyacinths are usually quieter but i suspect
they can be just as loud when they get into a hellbent mood (which they're
less prone to do . . . .). Hard for me to compare a Macaw at full throttle
with a Moluccan at full throttle, though. I just get up and leave when either
type of bird gets too ballistic.

Hi-
I edit the Breeders' Bulletin (official journal of the Exotic Bird Breeders'
Association of America - EBBAA) and in each issue of the magazine, we
have a page called the "Featured Creature," in which we highlight the
personality and distinctive points of a species. The information is derived
from returned survey forms, so that the info is solid and useable. The
upcoming issue is highlighting the Hahn's Macaw. This bird was selected
before we realized that we hadn't really heard from enough owners or
breeders of these intelligent little guys to run with it.
If any of you has at least a year's experience with the Hahn's, or know
someone who does, I would very much appreciate your (or their)
completing and directly E-mailing me the answers to the following
survey.
If you will also provide your snailing address, we will happily send
you a
copy of the issue it comes out in. This will be posted again later as
an
appeal for answers regarding other species as well, so if you'd like to
respond on another species with which you consider yourself very
familiar,
please do so, but the Hahn's is most urgent. Thank you in advance.
In case you are giving this to someone not on-line to participate, our
snailing address is: EBBAA, FEATURED CREATURE DEPARTMENT, PO BOX

We have all the species you refer to except scarlets. We just
recently added a 6 month old male Moluccan and a 2 1/2 year old female
Moluccan to the collection. My personal belief is that a lot depends
on the individual bird. The loudest bird we have is a 2 year old
female Blue and Gold Macaw. The female Greenwing we have was taught
to scream by the B&G and reaches comparable volume levels. The male
Hyacinth can be quite loud as well, but has a different quality to his
voice. He "honks". I have heard Moluccans that could shake the
house, but our male baby is quite as a mouse. The female screams but
in a very high pitched voice. She is not nearly as loud as our
Macaws. Our darned little Hahn's can also be annoying with their
loud, high pitched calls. I think of the 2 dozen birds we have only
the Congo and Timneh greys are really non-screamers, as species.
As to how loud the large Macaws are: we had extra insulation put in
our new house to hold the sound in, and the birds are in the back of
the house, but when I stand out by the curb in front, I can still hear
the B&G scream and the Hyacinth honk. Inside, a single large Macaw
can be deafening.

I have found my Scarlets are quiet. The only time they give a
skill is when I'm late for feeding or they want clean water. I do
have them in a protected area with scrubs around them. Sweet
birds..
My greenwings were the loudest of all. What a roar they can give!
and they continue without stop, encluding the babies. They had to
leave here because of the noise.
My wonderful darling Hyacinthines are the same as the Scarlets
..when they want something ...watch out for they sure do their
thing but if they get the thing they want, they are silent. I
sometimes am thankful for their reminding me.
with the four Moluccans Sam, Apricot, SKywalker and Bam Bam it was
unbearable with their screaming all the day or most of it. They
took turns with it too. a bird would fly by and they would do
their hoooting non stop. Even , through the night about three am
, I would be awaken with Sam wanting to breed and Apricot not
wanting to do so they would carry with their screaming.
If my birds scream , I look for something around them or they need
something and this is their way to let me know it. But, they stop
when they get it...matter of a fact, they'll talk to me as I'm
doing what ever it is I think they are needing. Kinda cute

PS. I have a pair of unrelated young Hahns which are MY babies
from two pair. They have the closed AFA band and are DNA sexed. I
had the parents keept these two babies till two months. With that,
they are talkers, and so sweet.
$1,000 for the pair...

We would love to get some Scarlets and some Buffon's (sp?) too, but
unfortunately we are completely out of room. Actually we're more than
out of room, but that's another story. Our Hyacinth, Sampson, is just
now a year old and boy is he a sweetie. He calls for my wife by
saying "Mom Mom".
