I'm the owner of a pair of Zebra Finches which have been doing very nicely
on a seed based (non-pelleted) finch mix concocted by a local San Francisco
bird store; Spectrum Birds. But, alas, Spectrum has recently gone out of
business behind my back, and I'll need to get some more seed based food for
my birds soon.
Can anyone recommend a good Finch Mix (non-pelleted) which is probably
available in the SF Bay Area? I'd assume that anything which is
distributed by a national brand is most likely available in the SF area.

Thanks in advance! - Josh

Why don't you want a pelleted diet for your birds?

I know you're not addressing me, but I'd like to add my opinion on why I
would never switch my budgies to a pelleted diet. They have pellets in
the seed mix I offer and guess what is left in their dish when I change
the food out? You got it. The processed pellets.

Now, if I were feeding my baby, and I knew he liked carrots and not
green beans, you better believe my son would get carrots and not the
green beans. That doesn't mean I wouldn't offer him gb every once in a
while, but I sure wouldn't force it on him!

I buy Nutriphase Finch (seed) Formula at PetSmart. It's the only
food my birds have ever eaten except that I do also give them
veggies and boiled eggs, shells included. They especially love
fresh corn and they're fond of spinach and celery leaves. I also
give them Spring water. They've done well. They do pick and
choose the seeds they prefer, but they apparently choose well,
as they've never had health problems. Two of the four birds
are parents of the other two. The babies did well, and the
parents were fed as above while they raised babies.

Hi Luk
Thought I would reply to your post - I do sell a Finch mixture that has 18
Ingredients - Canary, Red Millet, White Millet, Flax, Nyger,Fenugreek,
Radish, Red Clover, Alfalfa, Mustard, Sesame, Canola, Amaranth, Broccoli,
Celery, Dill, Fennel and Quinoa ----- 13 of the ingredients are Certified
Organic ------ I mainly sell this mix as a sproutmix for finches and
canaries but a number of my customers feed it as is, right out of the bag.
Some people soak in water the amount they want just overnight, enough for
that days feeding. Breeding pairs that are fed this mix and are feeding
babies produce a wonderful regurg for the chicks in the nest, the result
being some pretty happy, healthy babies.

If you'd like to check out my website - the direct link to the Finch mix is

LOL! Good catch. Actually, if I got desperate enough....those pumpkin
seeds look pretty tempting!

Ravl
who sees pumpkin seeds in her *bird's* mouths all the time!
