I have posted previous pleas for help with my sick Budgie who has this
illness... And thank to many of you I have received information, The nearest
avian vet is 50 miles away and my phone line isn't equipped to make Long
Distance calls. So as for vet assistance goes... I'm in a bind, a few
people here have told me to assist the situation with castor oil and I used
that. But an almost unanimous inflow if people told me to use Baby Oil and
Dettol dilute. I have even found a physician's report on the illness who
also recommended Dettol diluted to 10% as a treatment. So I went to several
drug stores looking for some but was unsuccessful... I would like to know
of a SURE place of where I can obtain some, is it Over-The-Counter or
prescribed? But meanwhile, I got some spray medicine that claims to fight
off lice and mite for birds, It is Premium Mite & Lice Bird Spray from Eight
in One® For Use On Caged Birds To Kill Mites & Lice, Active Ingredients:
Pyrethrins - 0.030%, Piperonyl Butoxide Technical* - 0.300% (*Equivalent to
0.240% [butylcarbityl][6-propylpiperonyl] ether and 0.06% related
compounds.)
I am supposed to remove all the food and foodstuffs from the cage and leave
the birds, I spray the birds at a distance of a foot to two and then spray
the cage down. I remove the birds and place them in another quarantined area
and rinse wash the entire cage with HOT water. I did all that and left the
cage in the shower for about 10 minutes with SCALDING water... Now I wanna
know if this stuff is good and would be effective in curing my bird?
Thanks

You can't call from a friend's, neighbor's, or relative's and pay them
for the call?

You could ask a pharmacist.

No, it will not cure your bird. It's not effective on the type of mite
that causes scaly face. Only a vet can prescribe the proper
treatment/medication for your bird's condition. You're wasting precious
time searching for an easy cure.

You can try" tea tree oil", which can be purchased in a health food store,
until you can contact a vet. You must be very careful with anything around the
eyes. Regards.

I think all the things you do will work . But the best & simplest thing to use
is Vaseline & mix some sulphur Pouder in it & apply to feet & snears of the
bird. Make shure not to apply to feathers. It will stain. The Vaseline will
sufficate the mites & the Sulphur pouder will privent infections. Skin will
turn pink as the scals disapier & new healthy skin grows. Repeat as needed. It
has worked well for me in larger birds. Make shure to ware plastic gloves to
prevent infection to your self. Desinfect cage & aria near the cage well befor
returning the bird to to the cage to prevent reinfection. You may also consult
vet in your aria to treat bird with Ivomec . This is done with Ivomectin but in
to trinking water dayly for 10 days. Be shure to consult vet for propper
dosing. Regards Helga

Hi,
People also used to use oil to treat scaley mite as it is supposed to smother
them.
But the perscription is much better. It is a certain type of Ivermectin
(there are several types - the one used for cattle is the one recommended, but
there is, I think, a couple different types), mixed one part ivermectin to 4
parts of propolyne glycol, then dosed appropriately for the size of bird.
Well, you don't want to have to buy 100 ccs of Ivermection and a gallon of
propolyn glycol just to mix up a few drops so you MUST get this from a vet.
Even a dog and cat vet should be able to mix this up for you, then call the
bird vet to get the proper dosage. I believe my vet doses at .1 cc per 100
grams, but don't quote me on that as I don't have it in front of me. Also, it
should be used topically at the cite where the mites are.
