We purchased a Kakariki three months ago. Yesterday we found him dead in
his cage. The bird seemed healthy the day before, ie he did the normal
bird things: eat bird food, eat cooked sweet corn, flapped his wings,
played on the floor...

We also have a Quaker (eight years) and two black mask l.b. who ate the
same food and drank the same water. lived next to the Kakariki in
separate cages. And they are OK.

The dead bird was belly down next to the water cup. No external
injuries. Just eyes closed dead.

We took the body back to the store where he came from. They said he was
probably at least two years old. A necropsy will be done, but the store
owner said his position "indicated" that he ddied from a toxic reaction.

I feel awful that the bird may have eaten something in the house that may
have killed it. or is the store just blowing smoke. They said they
would refund or replace. some consolation.

Or maybe it was just old age?

Any Kakariki owners out there with ideas/experiences???

On of the things you said he did was play on the floor...

A breeder friend of mine had one of her babies (B&G) die
after two months at the new owner's home. They had allowed
the bird to play on the floor, and it had swallowed a carpet
fiber which wound around its proventriculus, preventing
food from passing through. The effect was similar to torsion
in dogs.

Had he been pooping OK? Did you notice ANY changes in his
behavior?

Anyway, you are doing the right thing by having a necropsy
performed. I have this done on any eggs that don't hatch,
as well. Unfortunately, you don't always get a conclusive
report back, but you MAY. That is what is important.

I am so sorry for your loss. Kaks are so neat...

The results are back on the necropsy ...

UNDEDETERMINED CAUSE OF DEATH

However the vet did mention that the bird was SEVENTEEN years old!

The bird store told us that the bird was at least "2 or 3" years old.
They only forgot to mention 15 years.

Well it was a relief to learn that we did not directly contribute to toe
bird's demise. We wish that we could have shared in a few of those
missing years.

Thanks for all the replies. We might conside another kakariki in the future

All too often, this is how results come back! It really helps to
know EXACTLY what happened, but sometimes this is the best you can
get, info-wise. Again, sorry for your loss.
