Hi everyone

I have two canaries which are in the process of breeding. The female one has
puffed out and is making a low pitch squeaking noise. She also seems to be
breathing heavily and is not as active as she usually is. She has laid eggs
in the past but has never acted like this. Could she be egg bound? If so how
can I help her?
She has been like this for about a week now.

Thanks

Lara

If you are unsure one way or the other, then you should absolutely play it
safe and *immediately* take it to an avian vet. Just make sure it's not a
regular vet who has little or no training in the treatment of birds.

If you have left her eggbound for a week, the chances are that she will
die. Get her to a vet as soon as you can if you intend to save her life.

I have difficulty believing that she would be eggbound for an entire week.
She sounds sick...you say she's laid eggs in the past- how far in the past?
And why are you breeding now- it's a bit early. Is she getting extra
calcium while she's laying? How many nests have you allowed her to have?

There are ways of assisting a canary to pass an egg which don't require a
vet, but the only ones I've used them on were hens eggbound for less than a
day.
