My neighbor keeps her 'tiels out on her patio in a custom built cage. The
temperatures at night get near or below freezing. The birds have been doing just
fine for years. Also, I have a tendency to keep the thermostat rather low (68
degrees) without any ill effects.
The birds become acclimated to the temperatures around them. My birds react more
to the summer heat (100+ degrees) than to the winter cold.

What temperatures are you experiencing in the day and night? You want to try
to keep the birds at fairly constant temperatures, as well as out of drafts.
If you feel that the bird is too cold, buy a heat lamp bulb. I have a 40Watt
one that does wonders. Position it at least a foot or more from the cage, and
shine it on only a portion of the cage, so that part of the cage is in
darkness and the bird can escape from the heat if it desires. Then using the
heavy towel around the cage may help insulate the cage. Make sure that the
heat lamp does not overheat the cage, and provide the bird with plenty of
water. Also beware that if your bird splashes water onto the bulb, the bulb
may shatter.

I wouldn't worry too much about the temperature as such, just make sure the
bird isn't exposed to a draft. We have an air-exchange system that exhausts
our birdroom about 10 times/hour and this time of year our birdroom
regularly is down to around 50F when I turn on the lights in the morning. In
the birdroom we keep approx. 100 cockatiels, 7 Senegals and 1 CAG and all
are doing just fine, thank you.

What are some ways to keep birds warm when there is a power outage? I've
got 1 cockatiel and 2 parakeets and with all the snow and high winds, I'm
just waiting for a power line to get knocked out and to be without heat
for days.
Also, is it better to feed birds a diet with a bit more fat in it during
the winter to help keep them warm? I know with wild birds we usually put
out suet in winters to help them add on some fat.
Thanks!!
