Greetings. Currently, my household has one blue parakeet of (admittedly)
indeterminite gender. Soon we will be adding one male Pacific parrotlet,
freshly weaned.

The parakeet is rather timid. It does not react well to people getting
within about four feet of its cage, although if one approaches slowly, it
will remain calm, chirping in apparent conversation.

I understand Pacific parrotlets have a so-called "big bird" attitude and
will likely attempt to dominate other birds. My basic question is: What
would be the probable outcome of having the parakeet and parrotlet in the
same cage?

Of course, the first thing I anticipate happening is that the parrotlet
will mimic the parakeet's somewhat regrettible vocal imitation of the
ringing of its bell. Since we are purchasing a male parrotlet specifically
for the increased likelihood of him being capable of learning speech, it is
hoped that we will be able to teach him some words.

Apart from vocalizations, I wonder about any possible physical
repercussions. Will they fight? Is it a better idea to keep them
separated?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I just brought home my first Parrotlet yesterday!! I adopted him from an
exotic bird rescue place this week. He is 4 years old and boy can he bite!!
He is the sweetest little thing but very very territorial of his cage!! I
would definately NOT recommend putting a parrotlet in the cage with any
other bird. I have my doubts that he will even go in my bird room with my 8
cockatiels. They are loose all day long but if I put my parrotlets cage in
there too they may fly onto it and lose a toe. People are not kidding when
they say that parrotlets have BIG attitudes. I just love the little guy!!!!

Do not put the parrotlet in the same cage as your budgie. I would also be
very wary of allowing them out together. Your poor budgie is about to have
hannibal lecter come to stay .

Other side of that is that the poor Parrotlet is about to have the RED
DRAGON come visit. Budgies can be tough beasties.

Most likely they will fight, both are rather tough little critters and
neither will back down. Might just be best to have a couple cages, one for
each.

I have a 10-month-old male Pacific and 2 male adult budgies (parakeets).
The budgies are housed together and the parrotlet is in his own cage.

Although he's becoming more tolerant with time, the parrotlet is VERY
territorial and will act aggressively towards the budgies if they are
all in the same area. They have to be well supervised when they are all
out together.

I would not recommend housing them together even if they seem to get
along. Parrotlets can inflict a great deal of harm with their much
stronger beaks. If you want a companion for your budgie I would suggest
another budgie.
