Wow! I didn't know that Woolworths was still in operation. About 15
years ago in New Orleans, Woolco (which I understand was run by the same
people as Woolworths) kept pets in the kind of conditions you describe.
As did other pet lovers, I regularly complained and even went in and
tried to clean the cages a little myself- No one ever came around to
bother me either, I'm sorry to say. No one cared. The birds were
desperately ill- even to my inexperienced eye- mice ran in and out of
their cages! Roaches, mold- it was deplorable. On one occassion I
released several bags of half dead fish from the shipping bags they had
obviously been floating in for days. I wondered if I was doing them any
favors- the water was foul and they were doomed either way.

When Woolco went belly up back then a woman who coordinated SPCA
volunteers said it was their karma for their treatment of animals- I'm
appalled to find that they were still doing this to these poor
creatures. I am appalled that any breeder would allow her birds to be
sent to those stores. Not to mention, fish, hamsters, gerbils & mice.

Well, the end of an era of abuse. Good.

Hi.
Don't get excited yet. I think up here in Canada Woolworths is being
taken over by Walmart who also took over Woolco 2 yrs ago. I don't know
what Walmart's like in the States but I know they need their collective
butts kicked up here. Any time I'm in the store there is green algae in
the tanks and dead fish stuck to the filters. Sick part is I have talked
to the manager of the area and she says she's complained to the higher
ups and they do nothing about it. I do feel sorry for her cause I have
seen the people that work under her and they are all a bunch of kids that
are more interested in their make-up than working. She's an older lady so
the kids just look at her and nothing gets done. She does try hard to
keep the tanks up when she's there. As a matter of fact I bought a
firemouth cichlid from her and she's so happy for the fish. Up here they
don't sell birds, thank god. I'd check it out to see if the same is
happening in the States though. This is just my humble opinion.

Wal-Mart is indeed bad in the pet department here as well. Their tanks are
disgusting, and while they do not often have other animals now and then
around holidays they get small animals and used to get a cockatiel or two
as well. Deplorable care and conditions.

The Wal-mart here quit selling fish and small animals for a long time.
Now they have built a new store and have gone back to selling fish.
However an improvement has been made in the care of the tanks. Jeanie

We have a Woolworth's in Middletown, RI. They have facilities for selling
small birds, but there were not actually any birds present in them. It
looked like they had sold birds in the past, and didn't get around to
discarding the cages after they quit. They do sell some small tropical
fish, but I am not familiar enough with fish to comment on their quality.
Mostly, they just had pet supplies for sale.

I have had long conversations with the employees at our local walmart.
Some of them have expressed concern, while most look at me like I'm
crazy for worrying about a $1.50 fish. The best way to stop this kind
of neglect and abuse is to not patronize the store. Write a polite
letter to the manager or owner of the store expressing your feelings,
and state that if changes aren't made that you will take your buisness
elsewhere. I personally do not patronize walmart, their pet centers
being only one of many reasons. One person's buisness might not mean a
lot to Sam Walton, but a large group of one persons might.

Well, first off, Sam Walton is about 6 feet under right now, and the folks
running the company don't care nearly as much about the customer has he
did, nor will they ever.

Our local Wal-Mart carries fish only, I've never seen anything but clean
tanks and healthy fish, and humane treatment from employees. As such, I
don't see a problem, if you've seen the abuse then I could understand your
feelings, but I've got to see it for myself to act on it.

P.S. - One of our local Wal-marts carried birds up until a year ago, I was
glad to see them gone, they never sold too well and didn't 'look' happy.

I am suprised to hear that some of the Woolworths kept their birds in poor
conditions. I got my budgie from a Woolworths, and he is 7 years old and
still going strong. I also saw budgies at a different Woolworths, and
they were in a pretty big cage; they all looked happy and healthy (active,
smooth feathers, responsive to their surroundings). That is only two
stores though, I dont know about the others.

The Wal-Mart in Salt Lake apparently has someone who knows how to care
for the tanks. They are clean and the fish are healthy. This is
difficult to do in a retail situation since the ideal ratio is one inch
of fish to one gallon of water. I have never seen birds there, but if
the cages were clean and they had food and fresh water, I might purchase
a bird there too.

i understand about the fish - i see the green tanks of fish and i have
sents letters to the mangmnt dept - i have had no reply - i go there to
pick up food becaues it is close - but what really teared me was the way
the birds were all sitting on the bottom of the cages - they were sick and
some were dead - some were flying around and i - being an animal lover -
cried and left and reported it to the humane dept of my city and the
animal protection.
they investigated and along w/my letters - 27 of my friends wrote also -
they were forced to make improvements or close the animal dept - they have
done neithor and after 2 yrs of going back and forth w/court orders - the
store is closing. i have bought 4 doz animals from them and after
learning what they carried and which sicknesses to treat i look very hard
at pet stores and the way people treat and care for animals - the power is
in the heart of thise who care!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
