hi,

I was wondering how long it takes for budgie eggs to hatch?? Also if the hen
is already raising a clutch how do you stop her from laying any more eggs so
she can have a break once the first clutch is reared. I suppose you take the
male out of the cage but is it possible for her to take care of the chicks and
herself properly without the help of the male? please help

Carly,

First, don't remove the male, that's backwards. As the chicks get older
the male is the one who feeds the chicks and teaches them how to eat
"adult" food. Don't split the pair apart until the chicks start
venturing outside the nest box. About that time the father will start
feeding the babies. Most exhibition breeders will let their pairs do two
rounds of chicks before splitting up their pairs. It isn't so much how
many eggs she lays which is the problem, it's how many chicks she has to
raise each time. If she only hatched 1 or 2 chicks each round she could
probably handle 3 rounds of eggs. If she hatched 7 or 8 chicks the first
time, you may want to give her a break after that round.

By the way there is a very active budgie mail list you may want to join.
The information on the budgie list and some other internet resources
follows.

Here are some budgie related web pages and Internet mailing lists. This
list IS NOT all inclusive. There are lots more web pages and the like
out there related to budgies, but these are some of my favorites, and
most give links to a lot of other web sites. If you're interested in
either of the budgie mail lists, you'll find them listed at the very end
of this message.

AMERICAN BUDGERIGAR SOCIETY: The official page of the Society, this
gives quite a bit of good information, along with some links to other
sites.

BLUE CHIP EXHIBITION BUDGERIGAR SOCIETY: An affiliated club of the ABS,
this is an excellent budgie site. Lots of good information, and lots of
links.

BUDGERIGARS GALORE: A really good web site from the United Kingdom.
Excellent information and lots of links to other sites.

BUDGIE MANIA: A good web site, this is the home page for the Budgerigar
3.0 program.

BUDGIES LIST HOME PAGE: This is the home page of the Budgies Mail Lists
and has some really good links.

THE BUDGIE MAIL LISTS:

There are actually two budgie related mail lists on the same server.
There is the Budgie list and the Budgie-Pro list [now the show bird list
and not just for budgies].

The regular Budgie list is NOT moderated, it is very, very active with
lots of messages. It is not uncommon to get 100 or more messages a day
from this list. And, they will not all be about budgies, this list is
very social and they get onto some interesting topics. If you don't
want to go through lots of mail, this may not be the list for you.

The Budgies-Pro list is moderated, and the volume of traffic is much
lighter. Messages on this list must meet certain guidelines and
socializing is not welcome. I'm not saying it isn't a friendly, helpful
list, but any messages not about budgies must be passed privately to
other. All Budgies-Pro messages are cross posted to the regular list,
but the reverse is not true.

Carly,

I forgot your first question. A budgie egg takes 18 days to hatch from
the day it is laid. There is a very important exception to this rule.
The hen usually doesn't start sitting on the eggs until there are at
least two and sometimes three eggs laid. So the first egg or two may
hatch the same time, after that its 18 days after laid. Because of
delays etc, most people say you need to wait at until at least 21 days
after the last egg was laid before you decide any of the eggs of are
infertile.

It takes 18days for each fertile egg to hatch ---they lay one egg every other
day so they would hatch the same way

you would remove the hen and let the cock finnish feeding the young --do this
as the oldest chick reaches 4weeks ---it will start to leave the box and start
eating on its own----if there are more than 4 chicks allow the hen to stay as
this will be a load on the male -----remove the hen when the last 2 chicks
start to leave the box ---if she lays on the floor in her new cage remove the
eggs as they are layed -----------your hen can safely raise 2 clutches prior to
a rest of 6 months if the pair is healthy and not in a moult ---

Dear Carly,

It takes around 3 weeks for budgie eggs to hatch. If the hen is already
raising a clutch, you don't need to stop her from laying any more eggs.
Just like budgies, they at most have 4 eggs within a short period. After
all the budgie's babies born, you can take away the nest. Don't be so
worry. The female budgie often will not have any eggs after you take away
the nest.

You should not take away the male budgie. It is because the male budgie may
feed the female budgie when she is busy with the eggs and the babies at the
same time.
My budgie had this experience before. The male budgie really can help the
female one for caring the budgie's babies.

Have a nice day.
