I also read that lettuce was bad for birds since it has usually been
sprayed.
What other delicacies should I try besides dandelions? Are there any
other
common weeds, or garden plants, or herbs that a Budgie will enjoy ?

Mine do too, especially when I serve it soaking wet
and hang it from the top of their cage. Hours of
fun! They shred it, nibble it, roll their bodies
in it, and fight nastily for it. I can't resist
sitting around and watching the whole show.
Of all the birds, I'd call budgies the cutest
eaters.

I would be very surprised if all supermarket greens have not been sprayed at some point. I always wash everything thoroughly, even if it is the unedible part. Lettuce is usually avoided because it is basically cellulose and water and there are so many other greens that pack some nutritional value. Dandelion is excellent as are carrot tops and broccoli, two favourites with my guys.Hi Larry

Larry:
Have you tried offering your budgie pears? Toby is particularly
fond of Bartlett pears and also enjoys sweet-tasting apples, such
as Red or Yellow Delicious and Royal Gala. I always make sure to
peel the skins and remove all seeds.
Wishing you many long and happy years with your new little
buddy,

Budgies love chickweed, spinach and silverbeet also. My budgies will
get into a piece of corn on the cob (is that what you call it in
America). I wasted several pieces while introducing it - it is
common for budgies to take them time to accept new foods - now they
love it. Their other favourite is the greenery tops off carrots -
easily grown in a vegetable garden or plot, or you can grow them by
cutting the top off a carrot and sitting it in shallow water, they
will sprout eventually but this method takes time.

well it is a pesticide

Ohh, I know, Spaz just *LOVES* his lettuce
I call him "Mr. Green Beak" when he is eating it.
He looks like a kid who has gotten his beak "Into the Cookie Jar"(so
to speak)
I buy the Organically Grown Green leaf lettuce, so I know there is a
less of a chance of it being sprayed.
I just need to remember to rinse it well *before* I put it into the
fridge, because I found little green bugs on it the last time.
The only thing I have been told is to not buy the Iceberg Lettuce.

Dear Larry: Just the other day, I offered a small chunk of cooled boiled
potato to my budgie, Toby. He's always been pretty receptive to new foods
and eagerly went over to inspect what was in his treat cup. I was really
surprised to see him nibbling away at the potato. He thoroughly enjoyed
it.
So far, the only thing Toby hasn't cared for is broccoli. I've offered it
both steamed and raw, but he avoids it like the plague!
I also offer (as a treat now and again) bits of pumpernickel bread. Toby
as well as my lovebird, Sydney, enjoy this.
Hope you're enjoying your little budgie as much as I enjoy mine. - Linda

Mine really like parsley- it's cheap, too. I wash it and clip it in their
cage while it's still very wet. They eat it and play in it.
