I have a green cheek conure. He seems to be straining to defecate--he
makes a strange high-pitched squeaking noise and shakes his body while
trying to poop. The poop itself seem to be stuck in the vent
sometimes. Sometimes the poop looks almost like mucus. His diet
consists of pellets and a parrot seed mixture, which has safflower
seeds, peanuts, and corn. The corn is a new addition when I switched
seed mixes about three weeks ago. He also gets some fresh fruit
everyday, although not much (he only seems to like grapes). I'm
wondering if this is a diet-related problem or if this is a sign of a
more serious illness needing vet attention. Any thoughts and comments
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like normal poops to me. The poops from my severe macaw (who
turns 6 today) and my Timneh grey range from almost 100% water to ones
that are so dry they bounce off the carpet. It depends on what
they've been eating, and why they're pooping (whether they just need
to poop or they're doing it to annoy me or they're scared or
whatever). It also depends on what they're eating. In general the
poops are usually like you describe, to a bit firmer. My grey poops
like your conure (squeaking and shaking) and has been doing so for 14
years. She's in perfect health.

All my birds, including Spanky, the GCC, wiggle their lil' butts when
pooping. BUT you said he's squealing while defecating and the poop doesn't
look right...have your bird vet-checked right away! Better safe than
sorry...please do call your vet. and keep us posted.

Call your avain vet immediately! It's *always* better safe than sorry, but
your little guy sounds like he's having serious problems. True a little squeak
will come from the butt when they are pooping, but the morning poop is the only
one that should give them trouble (just cuz it's so big from storing all
night). The poop being stuck also sends off warning bells. But the mucus
really doesn't sit well. Again CALL YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY! DON'T PUT THIS OFF!

My Pionus poops like that too. The vet checked him out (including
endoscoping his cloaca) and found nothing wrong.
