FYI: I recently visited a new store in my area and I wanted to recommend it
to everyone.

It is called Bird Paradise and is located in Burlington, NJ. You can visit
their site at www.birdparadise.biz

The website needs some work, but the actual store is great. Huge selection
of both birds and bird supplies.

Another great one is Parrot Jungle in Shrewsbury, NJ (nest to Treasure
Island)...the owner hand raises everything except the $16.95 parakeets...but I
bought a parakeet, and it is tame, calm, and friendly and knows how to step
up.

I have been trying to contact this store because I wanted to know if they
have any parrotlets available and no one picks up the phone.

When I was there they had a parrotlets. They even had a pure white one. I
was there one week ago and they told me they were expecting a "ton" of birds
in the next couple of weeks. That is on top of all the birds they already
had........

Don't rush over.

I just wasted a four hour round trip [and bridge toll] today only to be greeted
by someone at the door saying they were closed till some date near the end of
the month [or was it next month -- I was so ticked I didn't remember too well].

And no, they don't bother to mention this vacation [?] on their web site either.

[in case you can't guess, I won't be rushing back!]

I am shocked. Did they give a reason for shutting down like that? I might
think twice before heading over there now......

I have to admit, after fighting with traffic that was much too heavy for a
Saturday [there must have been a bridge opening on my way there], I just got
back in the car and drove off. I really wasn't in the mood for explanations.

From what I understand it is a *Family*(been around 20+yrs) operation. They
are entitled to a vacation like everyone else. I for one would call ahead if
if it were a 4hr round trip, its easy to blame some one else for your own
stupidity.

When I was there the cashier told me they had only been around for 6 months.
I wonder which is true......

Also, in all fairness they should have posted a major closing like that on
their site.

I just went to Todd Marcus Mirds Exotic in Cinnaminson, NJ and they have
notices up about Bird Paradise in Burlington, NJ. It turns out the reason
Bird Paradise has been closed it because the birds there have the "Parrot
Flu". It has been closed down by the health department. One of the workers
at Todd Marcus said the birds will be destroyed.

They has a clipping of the story from the local paper. Their website is
http://www.courierpostonline.com . I will search for the article later and
post it if I find it.

And a link to a public record of what you claim would be where?

Of course there isn't any proof to backup what this imbecile is claiming.
Perhaps its the same jerk who's posting signs about Bird Paradise in his
store for financial gain. I have purchased 2 beautiful birds from Bird
Paradise months ago and have had them independently tested for any and all
diseases. I must have bought the only two healthy birds out of the 200
they had available; I think I'll buy a lottery ticket tomorrow. The store
is very clean (this guy even says so!) and the birds are well cared for.
The staff is friendly and seems to really care about their birds and
helping you with yours.

Sounds to me like an angry competitor who should have proof to back up
bold claims. However, first I would invest in a dictionary and lookup the
word "etcetera" then lookup the word jerk.

I am convinced. You are Todd Marcus hiding behind the guise of an internet

what "birdsinhandle" said is true and i am not todd marcus or any way or
form involved witheither of these stores. but facts are facts and bird
paradise and animals excetera are two in the same. if this person says
call petco then why dont you. maybe because your not todd marcus but jack
lance or one of his employees. maybe the only two people on this forum are
jack lance and todd marcus. why doesn't someone call one of the vets and
ask them?

Or did all this happen and there is no public record?

Amazing. You refer to "birdsinhandle" as a third person and then state "I"
am not todd marcus, even though that email was addressed to birdsinhandle.
This is becoming comical. So, are you birdsinhandle or are you
knowittobetrue? Oops, idiot, you blew your cover. Amazing that you know
the names of the owners... and, bubblebrain, if any VET discloses
information, they can lose their license. You really need to educate
yourself. Between the spelling errors and grammar errors in your email, I
cannot even fathom you would be intelligent enough to own a bird. Very
scary. "Excetera"?? New word? Moron. Troll.

SO PROVIDE THE LINKS YOU KEEP REFERRING TO. YOU SEEM TO BE UNABLE TO DO
THAT.

PEOPLE! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Geez. I spent last evening reading the posts on
this topic. What a mind spinner! Are we bird lovers here? Maybe I can help
put everyone's mind at ease. I will refer you to Bird Talk Magazine -
November, 2004 issue, which addresses Psittacosis, and I quote "For some
reason, there is a stigma associated with this disease, and it tends to
evoke strong responses in certain people. While it is a zoonotic disease,
meaning one that is contagious from a bird to a human, it is a bacterial
infection, no more, no less. EXCELLENT AVICULTURISTS, PET RETAILERS,
BREEDERS AND OWNERS HAVE ALL EXPERIENCED PSITTACOSIS FROM TIME TO TIME,
AND IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY MAINTAIN THEIR BIRDS IN DIRTY, UNSANITARY
OR UNHYGIENIC CONDITIONS." It goes on to say that pigeons carry the
bacteria and, since most aviaries in Florida are outdoors, Psitticine
birds would be exposed. I feel bad for anyone who is thinking about
purchasing a bird who comes across this forum. You people are making this
out to be tantamount to New Castle's Disease. This disease is associated
with birds everywhere. It is not an epidemic (although I would get that
impression after reading some of these posts). It is easily treated. If
you check a census for the number of people who have contracted
Psittacosis from a bird, you will see that it is close to zero. Is this a
forum designed to trash businesses or talk about birds? Shame on the
webmaster of this site for not having put a stop to all this mudslinging.
Birds get sick just like humans. That is why there are Avian
veterinarians. That a shop owner may have been misfortunate enough to have
received a bird with Psittacosis or been somehow exposed is not a reason
to trash that shop or its owner. If there was an exposure, it looks as
though Bird Paradise took the necessary precautions to avoid any of their
birds becoming ill. I truly doubt any shop owner can post a notice that
they have NEVER been afflicted with any type of avian disease, whether it
be Psittacosis, Aspergillus, Polyomavirus, PDD or some other type of
bacteria. It happens. Give these poor people a break! And shame on the
Webmaster of this forum for not having jumped in and put a stop to this.

Thank you AVIANADDICT for putting the issue to rest. Spreading
unsubstantiated gossip about a business is really sleazy. It is a shame
when topic boards like this are used to slander and as a means to
advertise when it's true purpose is to help inform people about caring for
their birds. Posting under two different names is also pretty shameful
"birdsinhandle" and "knowittobetrue". The evidence is pretty clear that
you are one and the same. Grow up!

Faith
