Ooops, that should read "UPdate effort" (before someone asks if I'm running a
dating service for veterinarians!!).

Oooops, another file that hasn't been posted often enough. I updated it
(with everyone's help!) last July but haven't been posting it often enough (I
guess I was too busy with my web page or something :).

DAMIAN, if you are reading in, could you put this thing on the r.p.b home
page? It could go in pre-formatted (with the
,
command) without
much ado.

EVERYONE ELSE: if a bird vet that you can vouch for is not listed here, send
me e-mail with the words ADD A VET in the subject heading. I'll add those
up, otherwise I'll make an announcement sometime next summer for the annual
date effort.

:>My bird almost died because one of the vets you list as recommended for New York City
:>mis-managed his case and failed to notice that he was deteriorating, rather than
:>improving during a hospital stay. I have written documentation of the reults of this
:>woman's incompetance. It sickens me to see her practice listed as "recommended" in
:>your FAQ. It turns my stomach to think that someone might get her name from this FAQ
:>and lose their bird due to the errors of this woman and her staff.

I replied to Kayla, but here's what I said: that oftentimes, when people's
names {professionals in particular} are mentioned in the 'net, the comments
are positive in nature because negative comments have the risk of being
tagged as libel. So the usual thing is to say "I had bad experiences with a
certain store/vet in this area, contact me for details." That way the dirt
gets exposed in private.

I sort of "inherited" the vet faq list from whomever last updated it. Like
it says in the file, being in the list means someone, at some point, said
they had used that vet to their liking. However, Kayla's commet made me
think that having a list like that does zilch to let readers know about the
vets mentioned. They can get as much info from the phone book (i.e., that
someone at some point used said vet and that the vet remained in business
afterwards).

So... here's my proposal: whenever the mood strikes me (in the next 6
months :) I will again post asking EVERYONE to submit the names of the vets
they have employed. I would like to have each vet name to have TWO
e-mail address attached, so that anyone that is interested can contact at
least two rec.pets.birds readers who are willing to vouch for the vet in
question.

The idea here is that a person who finds the list can send a generic e-mail
to the two "sponsors" in the list, who will hopefully e-mail that person with
their comments. That way, from reading the list nobody can glean who liked
the vet and who didn't, and the privacy of all involved is maintained. If I
only get 1 person recommending a vet, I will only include that e-mail.

If I get multiple vouchers for a given vet, I will still have 2 e-mail
contacts next to the name (which may be good/good or good/bad) PLUS a list
of "additional sponsors," i.e., additional people willing to be contacted
to discuss a given vet.

2. Vets that don't get at least one positive vote of confidence will be
removed from the list. The idea of updating the list is to keep it current,
no?

3. Vets that get votes of confidence and votes of NO confidence will
have [like all others] 2 e-mail addresses as contacts. It will be up to
the interested party to contact those "sponsors" and up to them to reply.

4. Ultimately, whether this system works or not, or the "sponsors" answer to
queries or not, people looking for a vet can always post to rec.pets.birds
inquiring about specific doctors, whether they are in the list or not.

When I post this "for real" (i.e., DON'T SEND ME THIS STUFF YET, please!)
I'll be more specific. At that point, I'll ask that people say whether they
are willing to offer their name as a sponsor, etc...

Doing things this way sort of creates more work for EVERYONE, but I think
this approach will be helpful. Kayla, and others no doubt, are willing to go
the extra mile to help people steer clear of vets they feel are not to be
trusted. Likewise, they are willing to spend an extra few minutes typing
about a vet they really respect. Like I said, the list in itself is not very
helpful (no more so than the local phonebook or latest issue of Birds USA)
unless there are warm bodies behind it willing to vouch for the vets in
question.

Send me e-mail or post with any comments on this. I have no interest in
sponsoring one vet over the other. I just want to make the list a bit more
useful and user-friendly so that information can be shared more easily.

Well, Cathy, it would be the *least* you could do for them after
all they do for us and our birdies! ;)

Cathy:

Thank you for your hard work on this FAQ. But please, please, please can you allow
readers to veto inclusion of certain veterinarians?

My bird almost died because one of the vets you list as recommended for New York City
mis-managed his case and failed to notice that he was deteriorating, rather than
improving during a hospital stay. I have written documentation of the reults of this
woman's incompetance. It sickens me to see her practice listed as "recommended" in
your FAQ. It turns my stomach to think that someone might get her name from this FAQ
and lose their bird due to the errors of this woman and her staff.

The board certified avain vets at the Animal Medical Center saved my bird's life
after this other "avian" vet screwed up. I will never again place my birds lives in
the hands of any other doctors in NYC. I don't want to see readers of this newsgroup
make the same mistake I did.

Kayla, Willie and Dinsdale (who is lucky to be here)

Hello!

What a fun (and useful) thread this is! Please let me add a "commercial"
for our favorite vet (mine and my birdies', that is). I'm in the greater
Washington, D.C. area, in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Our vet is:

Dr. Debbie Alls-Temples
Gaithersburg Animal Hospital
280 N. Frederick Avenue (which is also #355)
Gaithersburg, MD 20877
301-948-2828

These people were *wonderful* when the first Mrs. O. was eggbound, and
pulled through a very sick little birdie, even though it took quite awhile.
(Then she had to be adopted out by someone who had no male 'tiels, as it
was advised that she not be permitted to breed again, for her own safety).
Dr. Debbie also helped me get Oberon cheered up after the loss of his
mate (it was a *bear* to get him to eat much of anything for awhile) and
has helped plenty with Gremmy's weight problems (the little monster is
now up to 120 grams! Yay, Gremmy! 15 grams to go...) Though there are
several vets on staff at this hospital (a group practice), Dr. Debbie is
the avian specialist.

The vet at the emergency clinic in Alexandria where some friends carried
Mrs. O and I was the greatest, too, and she is:

Dr. Rebecca Walton
2660 Duke Street
Alexandria, Virginia 22314
(703) 823-3601

These people are only "after normal hours" and have *some* weekend
hours. They are intended for animal emergencies during hours at which
the animal's regular vet is not available. Dr. Walton isn't a bird
specialist but was great with a sick, scared, hurting little birdie and
got her through a rough first night after she had passed the egg.
We've seen her only the once, thank Heaven - she's a great person, but
it sure is nice not to have any emergencies!!

Later,

Ann Godwin
Oberon and Tinkerbelle,
Cockatiels First Class,
and the Gremlin
Berrrrraaaawwwwwkkkkk!!!

Actually, a certain person sent me her recommendation last time I updated the
faq. It had the name and address to the vet and the statement that "he's
really really cute!!" I tried to think of how to work this into the FAQ but
gave up :)

Kids, a gentle reminder: I am NOT saving the vet recommendations that are
being posted to the newsgroup. I am not updating the vet faq just yet, when
I feel that urge to have my mailbox explode on my face every time I log on,
I'll let you know :)

Currently, I am saving recommendations that are sent to me by e-mail. If you
send me one, PLEASE say whether you are willing to have your e-mail listed in
the FAQ as a reference. Otherwise I will have to e-mail you back. Be nice
to me and help me type less!!! :)

Other than that, carry on with the vet gossip :)
