Consider clipping their wings for safety and training reasons. If
you're new to pet birds you can read the frequently-asked questions
for this newsgroup available at http://www.upatsix.com/.

Is there anything I can use to keep my parakeets from perching on top of
pictures? They make an awful mess on my dark green walls. I can't bear to
keep them caged up all the time. I was thinking of putting up some pictures
of cats where I don't want them to go; would that do any good?
I've only just adopted them so it's all new to me.
thanks,

My parakeets have two favorite resting spots in the living room: a
still life painting, and my mahogony secretary. I put towels over them
to catch the poop, and let 'em fly.

If you want them to be able to fly how about a seperate room? Is there a
room in your house you could put them in were there is nothing on the
walls? If not you could just take down the pics for a couple hours a day
to let them have some fly time.

You could put a higher perch where you want them to perch and put a newspaper
under it to catch their droppings. They tend to go to the highest perch to
settle down.

You could put some scary material like tinsel or something they fear on top
of the pictures. Making sure they can't eat it. Buildings keep pigeons off
with strips of wire that have lots and lots and lots of fine, upright wires
that make it impossible to perch - like spines - but I'd be afraid the keets
would hurt themselves on something like that.

And of course, provide them with more interesting places to perch, that they
will go to instead. My friend's keets have a playpen, a large wall mirror,
(I know it's supposed to be dangerous, but they know where it is), a large
plant - they love to tear up houseplants, get a safe kind - and a couple of
other places to perch as well as their cage. They fly around from each of
these areas to the next, and ignore the rugs, CDs, couch, etc.
