I am considering purchasing a Senegal Parrot or a Green Cheek
Conure.

This will be the first bird that I have ever owned. Could
someone give me some advice on what I should look for.

Any information is muchly appreciated...

Thanks in Advance.

You may want to get ahold of the Feb. '97 issue of Bird Talk. The
cover story is on the Poicephalus birds to which Senegals belong.
(There's a Senegal on the cover!)

I just visited with a Green Cheek conure and let me tell you it was
such a beautiful bird, excellent coloring and the best temperment. If
it wasn't already sold I would have bought it.

My $.02,

Hi Andy: Both species are usually quiet and very loyal. Click on the
site below and do some reading. Maybe this will help.

Hi Brian,

I think either a senegal or a green cheek would make a great first bird.
I have one of each and they're both great. Both are relatively quiet
birds, although my Senegal has picked up the sun conure's scream, so....
:). Both birds talk, but the conure is a muffled, scratchy kind of
voice that you really can't understand. The senegal says about 20 words
and phrases (he's 2 1/2). They both love toys like they're going out of
style. I realize I'm probably not helping you decide between the two
very much, but they each have their merits (Although, if you promise not
to tell the other birds, the Senegal is my favorite). If you're short
on space, the conure might be the better choice, because it would need a
smaller cage (I'd still recommend at least an 18 X 18 for the conure).
My senegal shares a large cage with the sun conure, and he makes use of
all of the room--he's constantly playing.

You might try to find a good breeder or pet store that has both, and go
in to observe and compare them. Most of the time, one will end up
picking you out!!

Anyway if you have specific questions (about the species or general
stuff), feel free to email me.
